DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (24-26 overall, 12-12 GLIAC) earned a much-needed victory over Parkside (30-19 overall, 12-12 GLIAC) on Senior Day Sunday, 12-2 in eight innings. With the victory, the Warriors locked up the three seed for next week's GLIAC Tournament at Jackson Field in Lansing. They'll face the fourth-seeded Rangers on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Parkside notched the day's first runs with a pair of scores in the top of the third inning. Wayne State answered right away with a two spot in the home half of that frame followed by one in the fifth, two in the sixth, six in the seventh, and another in the eighth to seal the decisive 10-run victory.
Four of the seven Warriors with a hit notched more than one. Those four included
Caleb Sanders (Eastpointe, Mich. / Detroit Edison Public School Academy [Dayton]) at 3-for-3,
Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich. [Spring Arbor/Henry Ford CC]) at 2-for-5,
Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.) at 2-for-5, and
Reagan Paulina (Highland, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central [Oakland]) at 2-for-3.
Sanders and Dale each drove in three runs while Paulina,
Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton [Mott CC]),
Ty Garza (Grosse Ile, Mich. [Barton College]), and
Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich.) were responsible for one RBI apiece. Extra-base hit wise, Sanders doubled twice and Dale added a two-bagger of his own.
On the mound, three WSU pitchers combined to give up just two earned runs on six hits in eight innings of work.
Those three arms started with
Keegan Pulford-Thorpe (Aurora, Ont. / Newmarket [Central Florida / Georgia Highlands College]) and his four and two-thirds frames of work, the longest outing of his career. Pulford-Thorpe surrendered two earned runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts on 75 pitches.
Then,
Coy Plummer (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) garnered the first victory of his career after seven batters retired. Plummer allowed just two hits while facing two batters over the minimum on 35 pitches.
Last but not least,
Phoenix Guzzi (Rockwood, Mich. / Carlson [Earlham College]) made his second appearance in the Green and Gold with a scoreless top of the eighth in which he struck out the side.
Prior to first pitch, the baseball program recognized
Miles Jamieson (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South [Mid Michigan / Davidson]), Guzzi, Murciano,
Aidan Arbogast (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Stevenson [Mid-Michigan C.C. / Kellogg C.C. / Eastern Michigan]), Pulford-Thorpe, McGuire, and Dale.
