WSU Football - 2025 Quarterbacks Preview

DETROIT -- Over the next five weeks, we will be previewing each position on the 2025 Wayne State University football team with each position coach highlighting their respective units.  This segment is the quarterbacks preview with new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach J.C McDonald along with former Warrior Brady Beedon.

The Warrior quarterback room will have many new faces in 2025 with two returnees, two true freshmen and at least three transfers.

Junior Champion Edwards (Los Angeles, Calif. / American Fork H.S., Utah [El Camino C.C.]) returns after playing in nine contests a season ago, starting seven times (compiled a 2-4 record).  He became the first WSU player since 1975 to lead the squad in both rushing yards (570) and passing yards (899) on his way to earning Honorable Mention All-GLIAC recognition.

Edwards ranked third in rushing yards per game (63.3) among all GLIAC players during the regular season, as well as fourth in completion percentage (.540 / 74-of-137), sixth in yards per carry (6.3), total offense (1,469 yards) and total offense per game (163.2 YPG), and eighth in rushing yards (570).  He had the second longest run in the GLIAC (80 yards vs. Northern Michigan).

Redshirt sophomore Justin Cox (Akron, Ohio / East Community Learning Center) has appeared five games in two seasons with the Green and Gold, making four starts (1-4 record).  He has completed 63 percent (39-of-62) of his passes for 455 yards and four touchdowns in his collegiate career.

The two true freshmen are Dylan Kress (Aurora, Ont. / St. Andrew's College Prep) and Seth Sendry (Flat Rock, Mich. / Detroit Cass Tech).

Kress helped the Saints to two Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA) titles.  He set two school marks as a senior with 200 rushing yards in a game and 400 passing yards in a contest,  Kress was selected the 2024 Offensive Player of the Year for the CISAA and MVP of the Provincial All-Star Game.

Sendry was a four-year varsity letterwinner for coach Marvin Rushing and helped the Technicians to a 2024 MHSAA Division 1 state title, two regional championships, two district titles and three consecutive Detroit Public School League Blue Division championship game wins over King.  A versatile player, Sendry saw playing time at quarterback, wide receiver, punter, safety, and long snapper for CTHS.  He passed for 444 yards on 29-of-59 as a senior with six touchdowns.

The trio of transfers include redshirt sophomore Carson Creehan (Madison, Ala. / Madison Academy [North Alabama / Coffeyville C.C.]), redshirt junior Tydre Malone (Jonesboro, La. / Jonesboro-Hodge [Southern Shreveport J.C. / Grambling State]) and redshirt junior Braden Siri (American Fork, Utah / Lone Peak [Ventura C.C. / Golden West C.C. / Utah State]).

Creehan, after redshirting at North Alabama in 2023, appeared in four games in 2024 for Coffeyville Community College.  He completed 22-of-37 passes for 224 yards and three touchdowns with one interception before suffering a season-ending injury.  While in high school, Creehan helped the Mustangs to back-to-back Regional titles in 2021 and 2022.  He compiled a 21-5 record as a starter.  Creehan completed 149-of-225 passes as a senior for 2,662 yards and 25 touchdowns to only four interceptions.  He also rushed for 555 yards and seven touchdowns.

Malone played for the Southern Shreveport Jags Junior College in 2022 before the season was abruptly halted midway through.  He was on the roster at Grambling State in both 2023 and 2024.  Malone passed for 2,234 yards on 139-of-234 as a senior in high school with 32 touchdown passes.  He also rushed for 344 and eight scores in helping the Tigers to a 10-4 record, including two post-season wins.

Siri played in six games for the Ventura (Community College) Pirates of the Southern California Football Association in 2022. He completed 43-of-79 passes for 455 yards and four touchdowns.  The following season, Siri appeared in 11 games for the Golden West (Community) College Rustlers.  He completed 52-of-81 passes for 751 yards and six touchdowns with three interceptions, while helping GWC compile an 8-3 record, including eight consecutive wins.  Siri redshirted at Utah State in 2024.

Wayne State begins fall practice on Monday, August 11th with the players reporting the weekend prior.  The home and season opener will take place on Thursday, Sept. 4 with a 6 p.m. kickoff against the Tiffin Dragons.  Both season and single-game tickets are available by clicking here.
