DETROIT -- The Wayne State University football team (0-4 overall) concluded its non-conference slate with a 31-14 home setback to Quincy University (3-1 overall) on Saturday afternoon at Tom Adams Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The visiting Hawks garnered one first down on the game's opening possession before QU punter Alex Schattin boomed a 69-yard punt into the end zone for a touchback.
WSU drove 72 yards in 12 plays but came away empty on a missed 25-yard field goal. Â Big plays on the drive were a 27-yard pass from junior quarterback
Champion Edwards (Los Angeles, Calif. / American Fork [Utah] (El Camino C.C.)) to senior receiver
Justyz Tuggle (Redford, Mich. / Detroit Central [Bethune-Cookman]) on a second-and-nine, along with a 26-yard reception by senior
Angel Carrillo (Atascosa, Texas / Southwest [Livingstone College]) on a second-and-11.
On the ensuing drive, Quincy grabbed a 7-0 advantage following a nine-play, 80-yard scoring drive as the Hawks converted both third down opportunities and scored on a 31-yard pass from Bradyn Little to running back Kamrin Cox.
Second Quarter
After a WSU punt, QU extended its lead to 10-0 on a 21-yard field by Kiko Moreno which concluded a 44-yard drive.
The Warrior offense responded with a 13-play, 75-yard touchdown drive after the kickoff. Â WSU converted both third down plays, including a 10-yard reception by sophomore running back
XaVior Tyus (Portage, Mich. / Portage Northern) on a third-and-nine. Â Carrillo had a 27-yard reception and Tuggle contributed an 18-yard catch to set up a first-and goal. Â Redshirt freshman wide receiver
Drew Hickmott (Ortonville, Mich. / Ortonville Brandon [Michigan]) caught a five-yard scoring strike from Edwards to pull Wayne State within 10-7. Â
Both teams ran 30 offensive plays in the first half with WSU holding a 171-170 edge in total offense.
Third Quarter
The first drive for each team after intermission ended in a punt. Â On WSU's second drive, Tyus had a 26-yard reception to the QU 26-yard line, but Edwards was intercepted on the next play.
Both teams punted again on their next possession, before Quincy pushed its lead to 17-7 with a 63-yard touchdown drive. Â Two 15-yard penalties on the Warriors aided the drive which ended with a 12-yard touchdown reception by Cox.
WSU answered back with a touchdown drive of its own. Â It took just 2:49 for the Wayne State offense to go 74 yards in five plays. Â Junior running back
Brayden McKenna's (Lapeer, Mich.) first career catch went for 42 yards on a third-and-eight. Â After a 13-yard scamper by Tyus, Hickmott then notched his second touchdown of the game with a 17-yard catch from Edwards.
The third quarter ended with the Warriors trailing 17-14.
Fourth Quarter
Both teams punted on their next possession, before Quincy drove 53 yards in eight plays to lead 24-14. Â Elijah Genenbacher caught a one-yard touchdown pass from Little.
On WSU's punt, QU's Troy TW Crozier returned it 50 yards for another Hawk score making it 31-14.

Mikey Thomas (Salinas, Calif. / Marina [Cabrillo C.C.]) forced a fumble that was recovered by junior
Logan McGraw (Wyandotte, Mich. / Roosevelt [Hutchinson C.C.]) in the red zone.
TEAM STATS
Both teams ran 60 offensive plays with WSU holding a 337-308 advantage in total offense. Â Quincy led 160-58 Â in rushing yards, with Wayne State leading 279-148 in passing yards. Â QU converted 6-of-12 third down chances, compared to the Warriors 3-of-11.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
Tyus led WSU with 30 rushing yards, while Edwards passed for 276 yards on 22-of-33 with two touchdowns. Â Tuggle caught a game-high six passes for a game-best 79 yards. Â Senior linebacker
Martell Williams (Hillside, Ill. / Proviso West [Norfolk State]) had a team-best nine tackles (1-8), including two for loss.
LEADING THE HAWKS
Cox rushed for a game-high 70 yards. Â Little completed 17-of-31 passes for 148 yards and three touchdowns. Â Cox had team-best totals of five catches for 65 yards with two touchdowns. Â Brock Wiley posted a game-high 10 tackles (7-3), including 2.5 for loss (one sack) and a pass break-up.
UP NEXT
Wayne State will host its 88th annual Homecoming game on Saturday, Oct. 4 vs. Michigan Tech at 1 p.m. Â It will also be the GLIAC opener for both the Warriors and the Huskies, and the fourth time MTU has been the WSU Homecoming opponent (WSU won 27-10 in 2011, MTU won 30-27 in 2021, and WSU won 23-21 in 2023).
