Football Drops 31-14 Non-League Decision To Quincy

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University football team (0-4 overall) concluded its non-conference slate with a 31-14 home setback to Quincy University (3-1 overall) on Saturday afternoon at Tom Adams Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter

The visiting Hawks garnered one first down on the game's opening possession before QU punter Alex Schattin boomed a 69-yard punt into the end zone for a touchback.

WSU drove 72 yards in 12 plays but came away empty on a missed 25-yard field goal.  Big plays on the drive were a 27-yard pass from junior quarterback Champion Edwards (Los Angeles, Calif. / American Fork [Utah] (El Camino C.C.)) to senior receiver Justyz Tuggle (Redford, Mich. / Detroit Central [Bethune-Cookman]) on a second-and-nine, along with a 26-yard reception by senior Angel Carrillo (Atascosa, Texas / Southwest [Livingstone College]) on a second-and-11.

On the ensuing drive, Quincy grabbed a 7-0 advantage following a nine-play, 80-yard scoring drive as the Hawks converted both third down opportunities and scored on a 31-yard pass from Bradyn Little to running back Kamrin Cox.

Second Quarter
After a WSU punt, QU extended its lead to 10-0 on a 21-yard field by Kiko Moreno which concluded a 44-yard drive.

The Warrior offense responded with a 13-play, 75-yard touchdown drive after the kickoff.  WSU converted both third down plays, including a 10-yard reception by sophomore running back XaVior Tyus (Portage, Mich. / Portage Northern) on a third-and-nine.  Carrillo had a 27-yard reception and Tuggle contributed an 18-yard catch to set up a first-and goal.  Redshirt freshman wide receiver Drew Hickmott (Ortonville, Mich. / Ortonville Brandon [Michigan]) caught a five-yard scoring strike from Edwards to pull Wayne State within 10-7.

Both teams ran 30 offensive plays in the first half with WSU holding a 171-170 edge in total offense.

Third Quarter
The first drive for each team after intermission ended in a punt.  On WSU's second drive, Tyus had a 26-yard reception to the QU 26-yard line, but Edwards was intercepted on the next play.

Both teams punted again on their next possession, before Quincy pushed its lead to 17-7 with a 63-yard touchdown drive.  Two 15-yard penalties on the Warriors aided the drive which ended with a 12-yard touchdown reception by Cox.

WSU answered back with a touchdown drive of its own.  It took just 2:49 for the Wayne State offense to go 74 yards in five plays.  Junior running back Brayden McKenna's (Lapeer, Mich.) first career catch went for 42 yards on a third-and-eight.  After a 13-yard scamper by Tyus, Hickmott then notched his second touchdown of the game with a 17-yard catch from Edwards.

The third quarter ended with the Warriors trailing 17-14.

Fourth Quarter
Both teams punted on their next possession, before Quincy drove 53 yards in eight plays to lead 24-14.  Elijah Genenbacher caught a one-yard touchdown pass from Little.

On WSU's punt, QU's Troy TW Crozier returned it 50 yards for another Hawk score making it 31-14.

Wayne State turned the ball over on downs, before Mikey Thomas (Salinas, Calif. / Marina [Cabrillo C.C.]) forced a fumble that was recovered by junior Logan McGraw (Wyandotte, Mich. / Roosevelt [Hutchinson C.C.]) in the red zone.

TEAM STATS
Both teams ran 60 offensive plays with WSU holding a 337-308 advantage in total offense.  Quincy led 160-58  in rushing yards, with Wayne State leading 279-148 in passing yards.  QU converted 6-of-12 third down chances, compared to the Warriors 3-of-11.
