Men's Tennis Wins Two Exhibition Matches Ahead of Regular Season

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team competed in a trio of exhibition matches ahead of the start of its regular season.  The Green and Gold faced Western Michigan University, Huntington University, and Lawrence Tech University.

VS. WESTERN MICHIGAN
The Warriors claimed the doubles point against the Broncos, as the pairing of George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) and Thomas Mathys (Grimisuat, Switzerland / ECCG - Martigny) defeated Drew Evans and Jonas Keck 7-6 (7-2), and the duo of Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School) and Sam Knowles (North Shields, Tyne and Wear, England / King's Priory School) topped Ashton Adesoro and Matej Kajzer 6-3.

Day was the lone WSU student-athlete to earn a singles win, in the No. 1 position, besting Adesoro 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

VS. HUNTINGTON
WSU captured a 4-0 win over the Foresters.

In doubles, Harry Forsyth (Wamberal, New South Wales, Australia / The McDonald College ([Mississippi College]) and Luis Klaus (Brühl, Germany / Archbishop's St. Ursula gymnasium [TH Köln]) competed in the No. 1 spot, besting Javier Lopez Real and Julian Tantera 6-4.

In the No. 2 doubles, Day and Mathys garnered a 6-3 win over Mateo Batista and Juan Carrasco, while Wasner and Knowles bested Paul Reupke and Marco Silveira 6-2 in No. 3 doubles.

In singles action, Day collected a 7-5, 6-4 win in a match against Tantera in the first flight, while Klaus nabbed a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Batista.

Mathys earned a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) victory over Santiago Sarudiansky.

Wasner, Knowles, and Forsyth each had matches that went unfinished in singles.

VS. LAWRENCE TECH
Wayne State defeated Lawrence Tech 7-0, winning all of the doubles and singles matches.

Wasner and Knowles topped Carlos Patricio and Juan Pastor 6-1 in No. 1 doubles.

In the No. 2 position, Forsyth and freshman Warren Gunnar (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Ann Arbor Huron) earned a hard fought 7-6 (12-10) win over Augustin Patte and Gael Guthrie.

Cole Anderson ('Novi, Mich.) and Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany / Burgau-Gymnasium) grabbed a 6-1 win in the No. 3 slot, defeating Takuya King and Alessandro Gatto.

Wasner competed in the No. 1 singles position, beating Carlos Patricio 6-2, 6-1.

Hill posted a 6-2, 7-5 victory in the No. 2 position against Augustin Patte, while Mathys earned a 6-0, 6-2 win against Alessandro Gatto in the No. 3 slot.

Knowles tallied a 6-2, 6-0 win in the No. 4 position over LTU's Juan Pastor.

In the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, Forsyth bested King 4-6, 6-1, 10-4 and Gunnar defeated Guthrie 6-1, 6-4.

The men's tennis squad will begin its regular season on Saturday, January 31, with a neutral site match against Drury at the UIndy Tennis Center in Indianapolis, Ind.
