Women's Soccer Suffers 1-0 Setback To Ferris State In GLIAC Quarterfinals

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's soccer team (12-2-5 overall) suffered a 1-0 setback to visiting Ferris State University (7-7-5) in a GLIAC Quarterfinal match on Tuesday afternoon at the WSU Soccer Complex.  The Warriors will have to wait until the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, Nov. 9 to see if they have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.  WSU was ranked fourth in the Midwest Region heading into this week.  The three conference tournament winners (GLIAC, GLVC and GMAC) earn automatic bids with the next five at-large teams also being selected.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
The Bulldogs had the first shot on goal of the match midway through the opening half with Wayne State goalkeeper Kate Helfen (Troy, Mich. [Cincinnati]) stopping the shot by Jadyn Glover.  Almost five minutes later, FSU's Haley Buckman headed in a cross from Ava Roy for her seventh goal of the season.

Helfen stopped FSU's Reese Carmody about seven minutes, then turned aside a shot by Roy with less than six minutes remaining before intermission.  Bulldog Maryn Rettenmund had the final shot attempt of the first half in the final two minutes.

Ferris State had a 6-2 advantage in total shots attempted during the opening 45 minutes, including a 5-0 edge in shots on goal.  The Bulldogs were whistled for seven of the nine fouls and received two yellow cards before halftime.

Second Half
FSU's aggressive style of play continued in the second half with another three yellow cards.

WSU's first shot on goal of the match was by freshman Sienna Mroue (Dearborn, Mich.) in the 47th minute.  The Warriors other shot on goal was off a free kick by senior Reagan Brengman (Harrison Township, Mich. / Warren Regina [Northwood]) with just under 12 minutes remaining.

Ferris State only attempted two shots in the second half and neither was on goal.

GOALKEEPER INFORMATION
Helfen finished with four saves on five shots in the match, while Bulldog goalkeeper Korinne Ihrke made two second half saves.

UP NEXT
As mentioned above, Wayne State's post-season fate will be determined by who wins the three conference tournaments in the Midwest Region.  The NCAA Selection Show is slated for 7 PM on Monday, Nov. 9.
