TOLEDO, Ohio -- The No. 23-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (1-1 overall) fell 5-2 at the University of Toledo (4-6 overall) on Friday evening at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club.
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Warriors gained an early advantage in doubles, as
Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany / Burgau-Gymnasium) and
Thomas Mathys (Grimisuat, Switzerland / ECCG - Martigny) nabbed a 6-3 win over Pannawat Suttisomboon and AJ Sidoti in the No. 3 position.
The Rockets corralled the doubles point however, as UT's Lucas Britez and Poonthong Komolpisut bested
Harry Forsyth (Wamberal, New South Wales, Australia / The McDonald College [Mississippi College]) and
Luis Klaus (Brühl, Germany / Archbishop's St. Ursula gymnasium [TH Köln]) 7-6 (7-3) in the No. 1 doubles.
In No. 2 doubles, the duo of
Sam Knowles (North Shields, Tyne and Wear, England / King's Priory School) and
Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School) fell to its counterparts 7-5.
SINGLES
In the No. 6 position, Knowles battled with Joshua Mackey. The Warrior posted a 6-4 win in the first set before being bested 6-3 in the second. Knwoles nabbed an 11-9 triumph in the final set to post the victory.
Wasner was matched with Komolpisut in the first flight, falling 6-2, 6-2 to the UT student-athlete.
Hill, in the No. 3 singles, fell 6-4, 6-3 to Toledo's Cole Cozens, while Mathys fell 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) to Matias Olivero in the No. 4 spot.
Forsyth was defeated in the No. 5 position 6-3, 6-1 by Sergio Alejandro Gonzalez.
In No. 2 singles, Klaus collected a 6-4 win in the first set over Britez, but was trailing 4-3 before the Toledo student-athlete retired from the match.

The men's tennis squad will host the University of Findlay tomorrow, February 14, in the Dors J. and Donald L. Duchene, Sr. Athletic Facility for an in-region match.
