Women's Tennis Falls 4-3 at Home to Findlay in Battle of Ranked Teams

DETROIT -- The No. 22-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (1-1 overall) was bested by No. 16-ranked University of Findlay (3-1 overall) on Saturday in the Doris J. and Donald L. Duchene, Sr. Athletic Facility.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Warriors lost out on the doubles point, as the Oilers triumphed in two of the three doubles matches.

The pairing of Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) and Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) defeated Ivanova Lucero and Valentina Salek in 7-6 (7-2) No. 2 doubles.

The duo of Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia / Tbilisi Public School N145 [Western Michigan]) fell 6-1 in the top flight, while the team of Selin Kayakent (Bursa, Turkey / Bilfen Anatolian) and Rebecca Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) was bested 6-1.

SINGLES
Arafat collected a win in the No. 2 position, after falling 6-4 in the opening set before rallying to win the ensuing two 7-5, 6-2.

In the No. 3 position in singles, Szpakowska also fell in the first set, 6-1, but nabbed the second 6-4 and the third 6-1.

Kayakent saw action in the No. 4 spot, defeating UF's Audrey Ouellet 6-2, 6-4.

Beaulieu battled with Lucero in the No. 5 position, eventually falling to the Findlay student-athlete 7-5, 7-6 (8-6).

In the sixth flight, Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) nabbed a set-one win over Ivana Gombitova 6-3, before falling 6-1, 6-0.

Gorgidze's match against Anamarija Kovacevic was suspended.
