Baseball Cruises to 10-5 Win Over Lewis in Series Opener

Wayne State scored all 10 of its runs before the Flyers could even get on the board.

MILLINGTON, Tenn. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (5-0 overall) scored all 10 of its runs before Lewis (1-4 overall) could even score one of its own on Friday afternoon en route to a 10-5 victory for the Green and Gold.  The two teams will resume their four-game set on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. eastern time.

Wayne State scored one run in the first inning, two in the third and seven in the fourth.  Individually, seven of the Warriors' 10 hits came from the top five spots in the lineup as they were a combined 7-for-20 (.350 batting average) with seven runs scored, nine RBI and five walks.

Those five slots included, in order, Caleb Sanders (Eastpointe, Mich. / Detroit Edison Public School Academy [Dayton]), Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.), Owen Tuccinardi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline), Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North), and Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich.).

WSU's three other base knocks came from Gabe Zeldes (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day), Brayden Crowe (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland) and Ty Garza (Grosse Ile, Mich. [Barton College]).

With the support of another strong offensive showing, Will Lowery (Grosse Ile, Mich. [Kalamazoo Valley C.C.]) improved to 2-0 through just as many starts.  Lowery gave up three earned runs on six hits with only one walk and four strikeouts on 82 pitches.

First out of the bullpen, TJ McAllister (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / South Lake) turned in a pair of scoreless frames without a hit allowed, one free pass and one punchout.

Landon Ide (Fort Myers, Fla. / Bonita Springs) kept the shutout intact through the eighth with two hits surrendered, no walks and a strikeout.

Rhett Roeser (New Baltimore, Mich. / Warren De La Salle) then retired a pair of batters, but gave up two earned runs on two hits with three free passes.

Oscar Pace (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland) came in for the final out, and with the tying run standing in the on-deck circle, garnered the first save of his career.
