DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (1-0 overall) defeated Walsh University (2-2 overall) on Friday in the Doris J. & Donald L. Duchene Athletic Facility.
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Green and Gold was able to claim the doubles point, winning two of the three matches.
WSU triumphed in No. 1 singles, as the pairing of
Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) and
Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) downed Taira Abildayeva and Olesia Ivanshchuk 6-2.
Selin Kayakent (Bursa, Turkey) and
Rebecca Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) nabbed a win in the third slot, defeating Walsh's Liv Grete-Laarmann and Eliza Verstappen 6-4. Â
Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and
Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que.) fell 6-4 to Aleksandra Chmir and Lina Starke in No. 2 doubles.
SINGLES
In singles action, the hosts collected four wins.
After falling in the first set 6-2, Arafat came back and earned a 6-2 win in the second, followed by a 6-1 triumph in the third to best Taira Abildayeva.
Gorgidze grabbed a 6-2, 6-1 win in the No. 2 singles over Lina Starke.
Shanice Weekes (London, England) competed for Wayne State in the No. 3 slot, collecting a 6-3, 6-1 win over Aleksandra Chmir.
Szpakowska topped Walsh student-athlete Olesia Ivanshcuk 6-2, 6-2 in the fourth position.
Kayakent and Beaulieu each had matches go unfinished in the No. 5 and No. 6 positions respectively.
