CINCINNATI -- The Wayne State University baseball team (10-2 overall) claimed a third straight series to begin the season on Sunday winning the finale over Findlay (5-7 overall), 15-1. Next up on the schedule, the Warriors won't play for eight days before six games in six days down in Florida as part of the annual RussMatt Invitational.
Wayne State's 15 runs came in on 11 hits, including one run in the first, two in the fifth, five in the sixth, two in the seventh, and five in the eighth.
Eight different Warriors reached base via a hit, three of which finished with multi-hit performances. That trio included
Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.) at 2-for-3,
Caleb Sanders (Eastpointe, Mich. / Detroit Edison Public School Academy [Dayton]) at 2-for-6) and
Ty Garza (Grosse Ile, Mich. [Barton College]) at 2-for-3.
Hitzelberger touched home plate four times himself and
Nick Sandiha, Jr. (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Brother Rice [Macomb C.C.]) did so thrice. Sanders, Garza and
Brayden Crowe (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland) each scored twice.
Seven of WSU's 11 hits went for extra-bases, most importantly on home runs by Crowe and
Brady Blakita (Canton, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central), both of which were hit in the eighth inning. Crowe's second of the spring was a three-run shot while Blakita's first of the campaign was a two-run blast.
Hitzelberger (x2), Sanders and Garza each doubled before
Alfredo Velazquez (Livonia, Mich. / Brother Rice [Michigan]) tripled for the first instance in 2026.
On the mound, after a pair of no decisions,
Gabe Nazelli (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) broke through for his first pitching victory of the season with five innings pitched. Nazelli gave up one earned run on three hits with four walks and seven strikeouts on 82 pitches.
Then out of the bullpen, the combination of
Will DeMasse (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota),
Macio Miller (Kimball, Mich. / Marysville [Jackson C.C.]) and
Coy Plummer (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) teamed up for four frames of shutout work. DeMasse retired six batters before Miller and Plummer took care of three apiece.
