DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (13-2 overall) stayed hot on Wednesday afternoon winning its fifth-straight game, this time over Winona State (5-8 overall) by a score of 6-2. Next up, the Warriors will play their fourth game in as many days on Thursday at 11 a.m. against Minnesota Duluth in Davenport.
Wayne State struck first and did so with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. The first two scores were thanks to Winona State mistakes as
Gabe Zeldes (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) came in on a balk and
Nick Sandiha, Jr. (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Brother Rice [Macomb C.C.]) scored on a passed ball.
Then, the Green and Gold piled on when
Owen Tuccinardi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) singled (to center) in
Ty Garza (Grosse Ile, Mich. [Barton College]) and
Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) forced in
Rhett Roeser (New Baltimore, Mich. / Warren De La Salle) with an infield base knock to the second baseman.
Winona State's first hit didn't come until its first batter of the fourth with a solo home run to right. Wayne State took the punch in stride and responded in the fifth when Zeldes singled (to left) in Roeser.
The bad guys cut the margin to three again in the seventh before Garza drove in
Cooper Clark (London, Ont. / Lord Dorchester S.S.) with a single to left in the eighth.
Overall offensively, Wayne State's nine hits included three players with multi-hit performances. That trio included Sandiha, Jr. (3-for-4, 1 R), Garza (2-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB) and Zeldes (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI).
On the mound,
Gavin Nash (Howell, Mich. / Hartland) dazzled in the 16th appearance (eighth start) of his career. Nash lasted seven innings while surrendering two earned runs on four hits with only one walk and 11 strikeouts on 97 pitches.
In relief,
Will DeMasse (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota) was nearly flawless for two frames of work and the first save of his career. DeMasse faced the minimum six batters with no hits allowed, no free passes and one punchout on 27 pitches.
