No. 16 Baseball Scores 21 in Rout of Northern State

The Warriors claimed a 19-run victory (21-2) on Friday for their seventh straight victory.

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The No. 16-ranked Wayne State University baseball squad (15-2 overall) scored 17 runs between the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings on Friday afternoon to defeat Northern State (3-8 overall) by a 21-2 mark in seven innings.  It was WSU's seventh straight victory and fifth straight on the team's Spring Break trip.  The Warriors will look to sweep Florida on Saturday morning when they tangle with California (Pa.) for an early 9 a.m. first pitch.

The 21 runs were the most by a Wayne State team since also scoring 21 runs in a 21-6 triumph at Findlay on April 8 of last season.

Most of the damage was done between the aforementioned fourth, fifth, and sixth innings when the Green and Gold had 17 runners cross the plate.  Five base runners each crossed home in the 4th and 6th, while a grand total of seven scored in the 5th.

Wayne State started the scoring early with two in the opening frame on a ground ball from Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) that plated Nick Sandiha, Jr. (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Brother Rice [Macomb C.C.]).  Then, Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich.) singled up the middle for the game's second run of the first inning.

The second featured a Sandiha, Jr., ground ball to plate the third run, while a wild pitch scored the fourth WSU run.  That set the stage for an explosive fourth, which was highlighted by a two-run shot to left center by Owen Tuccinardi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline), which was his team-leading fifth of the campaign.  Prior to that, Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.) plated two with a triple.  That frame was capped with a run-scoring single courtesy of Caleb Sanders (Eastpointe, Mich. / Detroit Edison Public School Academy [Dayton]), who also walked to score a run in the 5th inning.

Two more Warriors joined the party in the following inning, as Drew Dawson (Plymouth, Mich.) had a two-run single and Brady Blakita (Canton, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) a two-run double that made the score 16-0 Wayne State.

After the Wolves broke through with a run of their own in the bottom of the 5th, WSU finished its barrage in the top of the 6th.  Hatzigeorgiou delivered a sacrifice fly, before Dawson walked with the bases loaded for another RBI on his box score.  Blakita was hit by a pitch with the bags still full to make it 19-0, while Sandiha, Jr., capped things off with a two-run single to plate both Dawson and Gabe Zeldes (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day).

Making his first start of the season, Macio Miller (Kimball, Mich. / Marysville [Jackson C.C.]) was dominant in his four innings of work.  The graduate student scattered four singles to go with eight strikeouts and no walks for his first win of 2026 in his third appearance.  Miller's eight punchouts were the most of his Wayne State career, surpassing the six he had on March 7, 2025, against Point Park.

Carson Tehan (LaSalle, Ont. / Sandwich S.S.), Oscar Pace (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland), and Braylon Laroo (Canton, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) wrapped things up with an inning apiece.  Pace struck out the side in the 6th inning on 18 pitches, while Tehan added two strikeouts to his ledger.
