Women's Tennis Falls 5-2 to Oakland at Home

DETROIT -- The No. 44-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (3-5 overall) fell 5-2 to Division 1 Oakland University (5-8 overall) on Saturday in the Duchene Athletic Facility.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Golden Grizzlies won two of the three matches to collect the doubles point.

At the No. 1 position, Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) and Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) downed Edie Hammond and Emilia Jarvinen 6-2.

Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) and Selin Kayakent (Bursa, Turkey / Bilfen Anatolian) fell 6-2 at the No. 2 doubles slot to Nisa Bulut and Oliwia Klimas.

Martyna Piechowicz and Tara Montreuil downed Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) and Rebecca Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) 6-2 at the No. 3 doubles position.

SINGLES
Arafat posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over OU's Piechowicz at the top singles flight.

Beaulieu nabbed a win in the No. 4 spot, besting Hammond 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-4.

Szpakowska fell in the opening set to Bulut 6-4, but nabbed a 6-3 triumph in the second.  Bulut prevailed in the third 6-4.

Freshman Kayakent fell 6-3, 6-1 to Klimas in the No. 3 singles slot.

Laynes was bested 6-1, 6-2 by Tara Montreuil in the sixth singles position.

Uzcategui was trailing Jarvinen 5-4 before having to retire due to an injury.

UP NEXT
The Green and Gold will begin conference action one week from now (March 28), as the squad travels to Grand Rapids, Mich., to face Davenport University at 11:00 AM.
