Softball Swept By Ferris State

Warriors return home on March 28-29.

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball team (8-13 overall, 0-4 GLIAC) continued its conference season-opening weekend with a pair of games on Sunday at Ferris State University (16-11 overall, 2-0 GLIAC).  The host Bulldogs rallied from a 3-0 deficit to claim game one 9-3.  FSU took the nightcap 8-1.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Warriors jumped on FSU starter Katie Shuboy by scoring three times in the top of the first.  Sophomore shortstop Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) had a leadoff triple to right center.  Freshman right fielder Brooke Bunch (Almont, Mich.) and sophomore first baseman Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) each walked to load the bases.  Sophomore third baseman Kate DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) worked a seven-pitch walk to plate the game's first run.  Junior pitcher Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) drove in a run with a one-out single through the left side with WSU's third run scoring on a fielder's choice off the bat of senior second baseman Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.)

Ferris State scored twice in the bottom of the frame on a one-out single by Alexis Kozlowski and a two-out home run by Emma Herremans.

After a leadoff double in the second by junior center fielder Mia Hool (Allen Park, Mich.), Shuboy retired 16 of the next 17 Warrior batters until pinch-hitter Ellery Garver (Weidman, Mich. / Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart) had a one-out infield single in the seventh.  The only hit during Shuboy's strong stretch was a single by Long.

The Bulldogs scored three times in the bottom of the third on a leadoff home run by Kozlowski and a two-run shot by Emma Gillard, which snapped a 3-3 deadlock.

FSU added four runs in the fourth on a fielder's choice by Kozlowski, a sacrifice fly by Ava Gardner and another two-run home run by Gillard.

IN THE CIRCLE
Long (4-7) surrendered five earned run on five hits and two walks in 2.1 innings, while recording two strikeouts.  Junior Kyra Shadduck (DeWitt, Mich. [Lansing C.C.]) tossed the final 3.2 innings and allowed four earned runs on three hits and one walk.  Shadduck struck out two.

Shuboy (7-2) went the distance holding WSU to three earned runs on six hits.  She struck out four and walked three.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Long went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

LEADING THE BULLDOGS
Gillard went 2-for-2 with four RBI, while Kozlowski had two hits, scored three times and had two RBI.

GAME TWO RECAP
Ferris State scored once in the bottom of the first on a walk, a single by Gardner and an RBI ground out off the bat of Herremans.

FSU extended its lead to 2-0 in the second on a leadoff double by Jayden Marlatt, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly by Molly Versluis.

Wayne State cut its deficit in half as Long led off the fourth with a solo home run, her second round-tripper of the season.

The Bulldogs answered with five runs in the bottom of the fourth.  Emily Killion and Garner each smacked two-run home runs, sandwiched around a sacrifice fly by Kozlowski.

Ferris State's final run came in the sixth on a leadoff walk, a sacrifice bunt which moved the runner to third and an RBI single by Gardner.

IN THE CIRCLE
Senior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) allowed seven earned runs on eight hits in four innings of work.  She struck out one and walked two to fall to 0-3.  Koopman tossed the final two innings allowing one earned run on one hit and a walk.

Cecelia Bell (5-5) went the distance for FSU limiting WSU to one earned run on five hits in seven innings.  She struck out three and did not walk a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Molly Hool and Brooke Bunch each had two hits, while Long drove in the lone WSU run with a solo home run.

LEADING THE BULLDOGS
Garnder went 4-for-4 with three RBI, while Marlatt had two hits and scored twice.  Jadyn Joseph reached base in all six plate appearances in the twinbill going 2-for-2 with three walks and a hit by pitch.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will try to snap its four-game losing streak this coming Saturday (March 28) when the Warriors entertain Parkside for a GLIAC doubleheader.  First pitch at Gary Bryce Field is slated for 1 PM.
