Baseball Splits Sunday Doubleheader at Davenport to Complete Series

The Warriors recovered from a 2-1 loss in Game 1 to take Game 2, 10-5.

CALEDONIA, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked Wayne State University baseball squad (21-5 overall, 5-3 GLIAC) faced its first true adversity of the season on Sunday afternoon at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.  The Warriors fell by a narrow 2-1 margin to Davenport (14-16 overall, 6-2 GLIAC) in the first game to drop back-to-back contests for the first time in 2026, after also suffering a defeat on Saturday.  However, WSU recovered and recorded a 10-5 triumph in the second contest to split the road series with DU.  Wayne State will next look ahead to its much-anticipated first home stand of the campaign, beginning with a solo game vs. Ohio Dominican on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

GAME ONE
Sunday's first game was a pitching-first affair, with just three runs total in the seven innings.  The Panthers struck in the bottom of the first with two runs on a two-run double from Aiden Warn, which were all the runs that DU needed.

The Green and Gold scored its run in the top of the fifth inning when Nick Sandiha, Jr. (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Brother Rice [Macomb C.C.]) doubled down the left field line, advanced to third base on a foul out, then scored on Brayden Crowe's (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland) sacrifice fly.

Ultimately, that was all the Warriors would tally.  WSU had the tying run on base in each of the final two innings, but Davenport's starter Easton Remick quelled the threat both times.

The tough-luck loser was Gavin Nash (Howell, Mich. / Hartland), as the redshirt sophomore put in a quality effort over his six innings of work.  Nash allowed just four hits, the two earned runs, and did not walk a single batter.  He also punched out five Panther hitters.  Nash fell to 2-3 overall on the season with the loss.

GAME TWO
After seeing just one runner cross the plate in the first game, the Green and Gold flexed its muscles in the nightcap by posting 10 runs on the board.

Both squads scored twice in the opening frame, with WSU's runs coming on a single via Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.) and then Hitzelberger himself scoring on a muff by the DU first baseman.  The Panthers quickly knotted the score at 2-2 on a two-RBI single from Travis Liford.

The next two innings would go scoreless before the Warriors broke through with a five-spot in the fourth frame.  All five runs came with two outs and were unearned after a Davenport error helped extend the inning.  Taking advantage of the gift provided by the opposing defense, Ty Garza (Grosse Ile, Mich. [Barton College]) came through with an infield single down the third-base line to give the Green and Gold a 3-2 advantage.  Next, Alfredo Velazquez (Livonia, Mich. / Brother Rice [Michigan]) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in another.  In his first at bat after taking over in the bottom of the third, Brady Blakita (Canton, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) singled home both Garza and Landon Ide (Fort Myers, Fla. / Bonita Springs), before Hitzelberger plated Velazquez with a single of his own to finish the inning.

WSU made it 9-2 for the guests in the fifth inning on a RBI single courtesy of Cooper Clark (London, Ont. / Lord Dorchester S.S.), who then later scored on a throwing error off a stolen base attempt from Garza.

The final Warrior run was posted in the top of the sixth on the second home run of the season from Blakita.  He had not homered since March 1 against Findlay prior to Sunday's blast.  Davenport had a run in the fifth and two in the eighth to eventually close the gap to five, but it was not nearly enough.

In his first start as a Warrior in his sixth appearance, Philip Miller was a winner to improve to 3-0 on the campaign.  Miller worked six frames and allowed just three runs on eight hits for a quality start, while striking out three and walking one.  Seeing work in relief over the final four innings were Macio Miller (Kimball, Mich. / Marysville [Jackson C.C.]), Nick Baker (Brighton, Mich. [Lansing C.C.]), and TJ McAllister (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / South Lake).
