Softball Sweeps Roosevelt To Extend Winning Streak To Four Games

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball squad (12-13 overall, 4-4 GLIAC) completed its weekend sweep by edging Roosevelt University (7-19 overall, 1-5 GLIAC) 1-0 and 5-4 in a Sunday afternoon twinbill at Gary L. Bryce Field.

GAME ONE RECAP
Neither team had a runner get past second base through the first three-and-a-half innings.  In the bottom of the fourth, senior designated player Kennedy Cole (Hopkins, Mich. / Wayland Union [Kent State]) advanced all the way to second on a throwing error by the Laker third baseman leading off the frame.  A sacrifice bunt by sophomore third baseman Kate DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) moved Cole to third, where she scored on a sacrifice fly by senior second baseman Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.).

RU had two base runners in the fifth with two outs but a pop out ended that threat.

In the top of the seventh, Roosevelt had back-to-back singles by Isis Enriquez and Madisyn Schrad.  A sacrifice bunt by Sophia Barofsky advanced both runners into scoring position.  A line out to DeWitt and pop out to Maddie Hool ended the game.

IN THE CIRCLE
After throwing 188 pitches during a 12-inning marathon on Saturday, junior Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) extended her scoreless streak to 17 1/3 innings by limiting the Lakers to three singles in the contest.  She struck out four and walked two, while throwing 72 strikes in 114 pitches.

Kailey Hancock (3-3) suffered the tough-luck loss.  She surrendered one unearned run in four innings on four hits.  Hancock struck out one and did not walk a batter.  Riley Czarnecki pitched two scoreless innings retiring six of the seven batters she faced.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Freshman right fielder Brooke Bunch (Almont, Mich.) had two hits, while Maddie Hool had a hit and an RBI.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Enriquez had two of RU's three singles.

GAME TWO RECAP
Sophomore shortstop Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) led off the bottom of the first with a single, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bunch.  After a walk to sophomore designated player Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.), Maddie Hool reached on a fielding error to load the bases.  DeWitt plated Near with a two-out RBI single through the right side.  The first pitch to sophomore catcher Abby Barnes (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Northview) was wild allowing Koopman to score.  Shenanigans continued from there as the throw from the catcher to the covering pitcher was wild allowing Maddie Hool to score, and DeWitt came around from first to score as the pitcher mishandled a throw home by the first baseman to make it 4-0.

Roosevelt cut its deficit in half with a pair of runs in the top of the third on four hits.  With two outs and runners at first and second, Enriquez singled to left scoring Barofsky as Near was unable to make a highlight reel catch in shallow left field.  Kennedy Calderon singled up the middle to make it 4-2, but Enriquez was out trying to go to third.

In the bottom of the sixth, DeWitt tripled down the right field line with two outs and scored on Czarnecki's second wild pitch of the game.  That insurance run proved vital in the top of the seventh.

After the first two pinch-hitters for RU were retired, Barofsky tripled down the left field line and scored on a bunt single by Ella Dvoracek.  A Kendall Pearson single put the tying run on base.  Enriquez check-swing single to left made it a one-run contest.  Things got dicey as a double steal put two runners in scoring position, but a ground out ended the game.

IN THE CIRCLE
Senior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) improved to 2-3 despite allowing four earned runs on 10 hits in seven innings.  She struck out nine and walked one.

Czarnecki (4-9) allowed five runs (just one earned run) on three hits in six innings.  She struck out one and walked three, but two wild pitches plated four WSU runs.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
DeWitt went 2-for-2 with a walk and scored twice.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Dvoracek went 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Enriquez had two hits and two RBI.  Barofsky had two hits and scored twice.
