Women's Fencing has Three Top-Five Finishers at NCAA Midwest Regionals

CLEVELAND -- The Wayne State University women's fencing team wrapped competition at the 2026 NCAA Midwest Regionals on Sunday, March 8, at the Wolstein Center on the campus of Cleveland State University.

The Midwest Region consists of Cleveland State, Denison University (women's only), the University of Detroit Mercy, Lawrence University, Northwestern University (women's only), the University of Notre Dame, The Ohio State University, and Wayne State.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Women's Epee
WSU was represented by Salma Abdrabou (Cairo, Egypt) and Reka Galfalvy (Budapest, Hungary) in the women's epee.

Galfalvy had a strong showing, tallying a 3-2 mark in the first round of pool play (+4 touch differential) and a 4-1 ledger in the second round (+7 touch differential).  In the final round of pools, the junior went 7-4 (+3 touch differential).  All told, Galfalvy finished with a 14-7 record (+14 touch differential) and earned a third-place finish.  It is the highest that a member of the WSU women's fencing team has finished individually at the Midwest Regionals since Pati Palczynska placed third in women's sabre in 2017.

Abdrabou posted a 3-8 overall ledger in pool play during the event, collecting wins over Denison's Tessa Randleman, UDM's Lusciana Ruiz, and OSU's Julia Semikin.  The junior placed 16th overall.

Women's Foil
A pair of fencers competed for the Green and Gold in the women's epee, as Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy) and Anabella Acurero Gonzalez (Valencia, Venezuela) both saw action.

Acurero Gonzalez placed fourth overall after going 4-2 in the first round of pool play and 6-5 during the second round.  In total, the sophomore posted a 10-7 overall with a +11 touch differential.

Mancini finished fifth, collecting a 4-1 mark during the first round of pools, followed by a 6-5 ledger in the second round.  The senior wrapped the Midwest Regional with a 10-6 record (+13 touch differential), posting wins over Ariadna Tucker and Yukari Takamizawa, who finished first and third respectively.

Women's Sabre
Shriya Bangalore (Frisco, Texas / Centennial) was the lone member of the WSU women's sabre team to compete at the NCAA Midwest Regionals.  The freshman fell in each of her bouts, including a pair of 5-3 defeats.  One of her setbacks was to Notre Dame's Magda Skarbonkiewicz, who finished as the event's runner-up.
