No. 21 Wayne State Baseball Records Another Doubleheader Split

The Warriors and Saginaw Valley State each claimed victory in Saturday's twinbill.

DETROIT -- The No. 21-ranked Wayne State University baseball squad (25-8 overall, 9-6 GLIAC) split a doubleheader for the third straight weekend on Saturday at Harwell Field.  The Warriors defeated Saginaw Valley State (18-15 overall, 8-7 GLIAC) by a 7-2 score in game one, but a late surge by the Cardinals sank the Green and Gold, 9-3, in game two.  The two teams will wrap up the four-game weekend series, as well as the eight-game home stand for WSU, on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m.

GAME ONE
Wayne State scored runs in the each of the first four innings and never looked back.  Four straight reached in the bottom of the first against SVSU starter Ryan Walters, who did not record an out, and three of those runners ended up crossing home plate.  The fourth batter, Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.) drew a walk against Walters with the bases loaded to force in the game's first run.  WSU added on via a sacrifice fly from Nick Sandiha, Jr. (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Brother Rice [Macomb C.C.]), before Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) was plated on a wild pitch.

The Warriors made it 4-0 in the bottom of the second when Hill's ground ball to second base drove in Ty Garza (Grosse Ile, Mich. / [Barton College]), who had walked to begin the frame.  The scoreboard quickly became 5-0 in the bottom of the third when Owen Tuccinardi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) bashed a lead-off solo HR to left field.  It was Tuccinardi's team-leading seventh home run of the season and first since March 21 at Parkside (game one).

Another sacrifice fly, this time from Hitzelberger, scored Brady Blakita (Canton, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-0 Warriors.  Blakita had started the inning with a double, before advancing to third base on a fly ball.  The seventh and final Wayne State run of the contest came in the same frame when Tuccinardi and Hill successfully completed a double steal, with Hill scoring on a throwing error by SVSU's catcher.

All seven runs were to the benefit of WSU starting pitcher Will Lowery (Grosse Ile, Mich. / [Kalamazoo Valley C.C.]), who rebounded from his previous start against Grand Valley State (eight earned runs) to turn in a complete-game effort in the seven-inning contest.  Lowery tossed five shutout frames before allowing a run each in the sixth and seventh, but worked out of further trouble to improve to 6-1 on the campaign.

Lowery's final line was 7 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, and 3 SO on 108 total pitches.  His season ERA lowered to 3.45 with the performance.

GAME TWO
In a change from the first game, this time it was the Cardinals that jumped out to a first-inning advantage.  SVSU tallied a pair of runs in the top of the first, before WSU responded with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning.  Back-to-back singles courtesy of Caleb Sanders (Eastpointe, Mich. / Detroit Edison Public School Academy [Dayton]) and Hill set the stage for Tuccinardi, who drove in Sanders with a single to left center.

The score would stay at 2-1 in favor of Saginaw Valley State for the next three innings, before the Green and Gold obtained its first lead of the contest in the bottom of the fifth.  Hill singled home Blakita to tie the score at 2-2, while Tuccinardi reached on a fielder's choice to earn himself another RBI and give WSU a 3-2 lead.

However, the lead this time would not last, as SVSU used its speed to take over the ballgame.  Ethan Scheib singled to start the top of the seventh and eventually stole both third base and home to tie the score once again at 3-3.  A critical error by Sandiha, Jr. in the same frame then gave the Cardinals a lead (4-3) that they would never lose.  SVSU went on to tally five runs in the top of the ninth to pull away and claim the six-run victory.

Keegan Pulford-Thorpe (Aurora, Ont. / Newmarket [Central Florida / Georgia Highlands College]) earned the start and battled through 5.2 strong innings.  The graduate student pitched scoreless ball following the two-run first inning and struck out seven in the process.  His final line was 5.2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, and 7 SO.  WSU's relief trio consisted of Will DeMasse (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota), Joel Mator (Trenton, Mich.), and Jack Saputo (Windsor, Ont. / St. Anne Catholic [Macomb C.C.]).
