BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The No. 18-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (12-9 overall, 4-2 GLIAC) dropped a 4-3 heart breaker at No. 26-ranked Ferris State University (15-3 overall, 6-0 GLIAC) on Saturday, April 18.
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Warriors got the early advantage after winning two-of-three matches in doubles.
At the No. 2 doubles position,
George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) and
Thomas Mathys (Grimisuat, Switzerland / ECCG - Martigny) downed FSU's Felipe Iser and Kevin Kovacs 6-4.
Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany / Burgau-Gymnasium) and
Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School) posted a 7-5 win over Milo Leuenberger and Praneel Pichika at the No. 3 doubles slot.
Luis Klaus (Brühl, Germany / Archbishop's St. Ursula gymnasium [TH Köln]) and
Harry Forsyth (Wamberal, New South Wales, Australia / The McDonald College [Mississippi College]) fell at the top flight, 6-4 to Adrian Catahan and Erik Kovacs.
SINGLES
After falling in the first set 7-6, Klaus battled back in the second for a 6-1 win. Â The WSU student-athlete bested Jose Andres Perez Alarcon 6-4 in the third set for the singles win.
Wasner flourished in the No. 3 position, besting Felipe Iser 6-4, 6-3, in straight sets.
Day competed against Kevin Kovacs at the top singles position, falling 6-4, 6-1.
Mathys grabbed an early advantage over Pichika, claiming the first set 7-6 (8-6). Â Pichika bounced back however, defeating the WSU student-athlete 6-3, 6-4.
Forsyth, in the No. 6 singles slot, fell to Erik Kovacs 6-3, 6-3.
With the match tied at 3-3, Hill was matched with Catahan in the No. 5 singles position. Â He earned a 7-5 win in his first set against the Bulldog, but dropped the second 6-2. Â The junior built a 4-1 lead in the final set before his opponent rallied to win 7-5. Â
