Women's Tennis Falls 5-2 at Ferris State in Final Match of Regular Season

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (7-8 overall, 4-3 GLIAC) fell 5-2 at Ferris State University (12-6, 6-1 GLIAC) on Saturday to close the regular season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Green and Gold suffered defeats at the No. 2 and N. 3 doubles slots as FSU claimed the doubles point.

Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) and Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) won their ninth consecutive doubles match together, and 12th of the spring campaign, besting Maria Fernanda Hernandez Ferrer and Ana Sofia Hernandez Ferrer 6-4 at the top position.

Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) and Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) were bested in the No. 2 doubles slot 6-2 by Ava Johnstone and Madeline Peisley.

At the No. 3 doubles flight, freshman pairing of Selin Kayakent (Bursa, Turkey / Bilfen Anatolian) and Rebecca Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) fell 6-2 to Yara Madi and Ainzley Zulueta.

SINGLES
Szpakowska continued her hot streak, nabbing her seventh straight singles win, defeating Madi 6-1, 6-1.

Kayakent earned a singles win as well, defeating FSU's Ana Sofia Hernandez Ferrer 6-4, 6-4 in the third slot.

Arafat battled with Peisley in the No. 1 position, falling 6-4 in the opening set before forcing a third after prevailing 6-3 in the second.  Peisley had the upper hand in the final set, winnig 6-0.

Beaulieu posted a 7-6 win in her first set against Maria Fernanda Hernandez Ferrer, before dropping the ensuing two 6-2, 7-5.

In the fifth singles position, Uzcategui fell 6-4, 6-3 to Ferris State's Zulueta.

Laynes saw action in the No. 6 singles slot, falling 6-4, 7-5 to Katherine Earnest.

UP NEXT
The postseason begins with the GLIAC Tournament, which will start on Thursday, April 23, with all matches being played at the Greater Midland Tennis Center in Midland, Mich.
