Softball Splits GLIAC Doubleheader With Visiting Davenport

Warriors win 1-0, before falling 5-2 in game two.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (15-22 overall, 7-11 GLIAC) split a home doubleheader on Sunday against Davenport University (12-30 overall, 8-12 GLIAC).  The Warriors won the opener 1-0 with a run in the bottom of the seventh, while the Panthers rallied for a 5-2 triumph in the nightcap.

GAME 1 RECAP
WSU junior pitcher Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) did her best Houdini impersonation in the top of the first after a leadoff double by Kailyne Luna, a wild pitch, a walk and a stolen base put DU runners at second and third with nobody out.  Long retired nine of the next 10 Davenport batters, including a comebacker ground out, a ground out to third and a fly out to end the first.  The lone blemish was a two-out double in the second by Sydney Drenth.

The Panthers had two runners reach in the fourth with one out, but a foul out and a strikeout ended that threat.  Then retired 11 of the final 14 DU batters for her fourth shutout of the season.

Wayne State also had its scoring chances early with back-to-back singles by sophomore shortstop Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) and freshman right fielder Ellery Garver (Weidman, Mich. / Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart), but the next three Warriors were retired.

WSU had back-to-back one-out singles in the second by junior Molly Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) and sophomore Abby Barnes (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Northview) but a caught stealing and a pop out ended the frame.

In the bottom of the fifth after the first two Wayne State batters were retired, Near worked a walk and Garver followed with a single.  Sophomore first baseman Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) was intentionally walked to load the bases, but a fly out ended that rally.

In the bottom of the seventh with one out, freshman Marin McCullough (Battle Creek, Mich. / Lakeview) laced an 0-2 pitch through the left side.  Near then drilled a 2-1 offering for a double into left center.  Garver singled to left on an 0-1 delivery plating McCullough with the game-winning run.

It was Wayne State's fourth walk-off win of the season, and the third straight WSU game-winning RBI by Garver.

IN THE CIRCLE
Long (9-9) blanked Davenport on four hits.  She struck out three and walked four during a very windy game.

Hannah Tahaney (4-13) allowed one just earned run on nine hits in 6.1 innings.  She struck out two and walked two.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Garver went 3-for-4 with the game's only RBI.  Near was on base three times with two hits and a walk, while Koopman went 1-for-2 with a walk.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Chloe Parker went 2-for-3, while Luna had one hit and reached on a walk.

GAME 2 RECAP
Wayne State grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to four consecutive one-out walks, and a two-out bases loaded hit by pitch.  Senior Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) was credited with the first RBI, while sophomore Kate DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) earned the second RBI by being plunked on a 1-1 delivery.

The Warriors were unable to increase their advantage in the second and left the bases loaded.

Davenport scored its first run in the third on a walk, a passed ball, a single and a first and third attempted double steal.

The Panthers went ahead 4-2 in the top of the fifth after a walk and single and a two-out three-run home run by Ally Prasnjak.

DU extended its lead to 5-2 in the sixth on a two-out single by Drenth and an RBI double by Luna.

In the sixth, WSU had back-to-back one-out singles by Lexi Mielke (Standish, Mich. / Standish-Sterling [Mid Michigan C.C.]) and McCullough, but an infield fly and a fly out ended that threat.

Koopman worked an eight-pitch walk to start the seventh.  Maddie Hool had a one-out walk, and Molly Hool singled but an out at the plate and a fly out ended the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Kyra Shadduck (DeWitt, Mich. [Lansing CC]) tossed the first five innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits.  Shadduck (2-3) struck out four and walked five.  Senior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) pitched the final two innings and allowed one earned run on two hits.

Alaina Schwanke started for DU and walked four of the five batters she faced before giving way to Kayla Widner (2-3), who only allowed one of three inherited runners to score.  Widner blanked WSU on three hits over 6.2 innings and 113 pitches.  She struck out two and walked five.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Koopman walked three times and scored a run, while Near and Maddie Hool each walked twice.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Luna and Lexie McCarty each had two hits, with Prasnjak driving in three on her second home run of the season.
