MIDLAND, Mich. -- The No. 3-seeded Wayne State University men's tennis team (13-9 overall) defeated No. 6-seeded Roosevelt University (6-14 overall) 4-1 in the opening round of the GLIAC Tournament on Friday at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.
The Warriors now advance to the semifinals, where they will face No. 2-seeded Grand Valley State University.
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
At the top flight, the All-GLIAC Second Team duo of
Harry Forsyth (Wamberal, New South Wales, Australia / The McDonald College [Mississippi College]) and
Luis Klaus (Brühl, Germany / Archbishop's St. Ursula gymnasium [TH Köln]) were matched with Juanse Caicedo and Justus Peters, with the match going unfinished.
The All-GLIAC Second Team pairing of
George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) and
Thomas Mathys (Grimisuat, Switzerland / ECCG - Martigny) posted a 6-0 win over Lluc Mascaro and Chakib Madcur in the No. 2 doubles slot.
Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School) and
Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany / Burgau-Gymnasium) represented WSU in the third doubles position.  The pair downed Abhay Singh and Demille Scarabello 6-4.
SINGLES
At the top singles flight, First Team All-GLIAC honoree Day bested Juanse Caicedo 6-2, 6-3.
First Team All-GLIAC recipient Klaus was leading over Justus Peters in the No. 2 singles spot after collecting a 7-5 win in the first set.
Wasner, a Second Team All-GLIAC selection, was surgical in the No. 3 position, besting Jules Rumeau 6-0, 6-2.
Freshman Mathys proved that the stage was not too big in his first GLIAC Tournament match, defeating Juan Pablo Espinosa 6-0, 6-1
Hill won his first set against Chakib Madcur 6-1 before his match went unfinished.
Cole Anderson fell 6-1, 6-0 to Lluc Mascaro in the sixth flight.
