Women's Tennis Falls 4-0 to Grand Valley State in Second Round of GLIAC Tournament

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The No. 4-seeded Wayne State University women's tennis team (8-9 overall) fell in the second round of the GLIAC Tournament to top-seeded Grand Valley State University (16-1 overall) 4-0 on Friday, April 24, at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The top pairing of Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) fell 6-3 to GVSU's Mozas Valentina and Natasha Sengphrachanh.

In the No. 3 doubles position, freshmen pairing of Selin Kayakent (Bursa, Turkey / Bilfen Anatolian) and Rebecca Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) dropped a 6-2 decision to Rachel Sam and Amanda Diaz.

Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) and Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) were leading 4-3 over Ipek Sakiroglu and Mischa Briggs before the match went unfinished.

SIGNLES
Arafat competed for WSU in the No. 1 singles flight, falling 6-3, 6-0 to GVSU's Sengphrachanh.  Arafat is second all-time in program history for singles wins, with 91 over her four seasons with the Green and Gold, while her 82 wins in doubles ranks sixth in program history.

Szakowska bested Briggs 6-4 in the opening set before the match went unfinished in the No. 2 slot.  The senior has tallied 78 career wins in singles, which is the eighth-most in the team's illustrious history.  Her 94 doubles victories is the fourth-most recorded.

Kayakent, in the No. 3 singles position, fell 7-6 in the first set to Mozas, before the match went unfinished.

In the fourth singles slot, Beaulieu was bested 6-4, 6-1 by Grand Valley State's Sakiroglu.

Uzcategui, competing in the fifth flight, dropped her first set against Anna Soteras 7-5, but the match went unfinished.

Laynes, in the No. 6 singles position, was defeated 6-1, 6-1 by Lauren Burkett.

UP NEXT
The Green and Gold will attempt to qualify for the NCAA Tournament, with the selection show scheduled for 8:30 PM on Monday, May 4.
