Women's Tennis Defeats UIndy 5-2 in Motown

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (4-6 overall) collected a 5-2 triumph over No. 38-ranked UIndy (5-8 overall) on Friday.  The match began inside the Duchene Athletic Facility, but finished outside on the WSU Tennis Courts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Warriors were able to sweep all three doubles matches to take the early advantage in the contest.

At the top position, Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) nabbed a 6-4 win over Magda Kornijczuk and Maelys Thiery-James.

Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) was paired with Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) in the No. 2 doubles flight, triumphing 6-4 over the Hounds pairing of Noelle Compton and Silvia Zappoli.

Representing WSU in the third doubles slot was the freshman duo of Selin Kayakent (Bursa, Turkey / Bilfen Anatolian) and Rebecca Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage).  The pair bested Jimena De Pablos and Liza Simak 6-4.

SINGLES
Arafat dragged her success from doubles into singles, downing UIndy's Thiery-James 7-5, 6-4 at the top slot.

In the No. 2 position, Szpakowska tallied a 6-4, 6-4 victory over De Pablos.

In the third slot, Freshman Kayakent bested Kornijczuk 7-5, 7-5 in straight sets.

Uzcategui nabbed a 6-4, 7-5 triumph over Zappoli, as the two competed in the fifth singles slot.

The Green and Gold suffered setbacks at the No. 4 and No. 6 singles slots, as Beaulieu fell 7-5, 7-5 and Laynes was defeated 6-0, 6-2.

UP NEXT
The Warriors will resume GLIAC action tomorrow, April 4, at 10:00 AM against Michigan Tech on the campus of Wayne State.
