Softball Falls In Two One-Run Decisions, 5-4 and 4-3, To Visiting Findlay

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (12-17 overall) dropped a pair of one-run decisions to the visiting University of Findlay Oilers (26-8 overall) Tuesday afternoon at Gary L. Bryce Field.  WSU is now 5-6 in one-run affairs this season after falling 4-3 and 5-4.

GAME 1 RECAP
The Warriors grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as sophomore pitcher Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) smacked her team-leading ninth double of the season with two outs and scored when a fly ball off the bat of sophomore third baseman Kate DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) was mishandled.

UF knotted the score at 1-1 as Annika Bredel led off the fourth with her team-best 10th home run of the campaign.  After a single by Joslynne Frazier, Kaylynn Carter hit an 0-1 offering down the left field line which just made it over the fence for a two-run home run.

Findlay extended its advantage to 4-1 in the fifth as Abbi Poths reached on a two-base error, pinch-runner Cassie Warner moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on the back half of a double steal.

Wayne State rallied with two runs in the bottom of the fifth as sophomore shortstop Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) walloped a one-out double that just missed being a home run by inches.  Freshman right fielder Brooke Bunch (Almont, Mich.) reached on an infield single that moved Near to third.  After a caught stealing, Koopman was intentionally walked.  DeWitt then worked a five-pitch walk to load the bases.\ before senior second baseman Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) ripped an 0-1 pitch into center field scoring both Near and pinch-runner Ellery Garver (Weidman, Mich. / Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart) to pull WSU within one at 4-3.

Freshman Ella Vinco (Riverview, Mich.) led off the sixth with a single but runner Julia Sandles was stranded at second, then WSU went 1-2-3 in the seventh.

IN THE CIRCLE
Koopman (2-3) allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits in seven innings.  She struck out four and walked three.

Alexys Antal (12-2) pitched the first five innings for Findlay and allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits.  She had one strikeout and three walks.  Carter notched her first save of the season by retiring all six batters she faced, including one on strikes.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Maddie Hool had both WSU RBI, while Koopman reached base twice via a double and a walk.

LEADING THE OILERS
Frazier went 2-for-4 with a run score, while Carter had two RBI.

GAME 2 RECAP
Findlay took a 1-0 lead just six pitches into the game as Anna Jones hit a 2-2 offering over the left center field fence.

UF added to its margin in the second on a two-out RBI single by Jones, and a Warrior miscue gave the Oilers their third run of the game.

Wayne State had just two base runners until senior Kennedy Cole (Hopkins, Mich. Wayland Union [Kent State]) had an infield single with two outs in the fourth.  The first two runners were a Near double in the first and a walk by Near in the third.

Bunch led off the sixth with a solid single to left.  With two outs and DeWitt on first, Cole reached as her hard shot to third was stopped by Poths for an infield single.  Freshman Marin McCullough (Battle Creek, Mich. / Lakeview) had an RBI double down the left field line and Koopman followed with a two-run pinch-hit single up the middle.  Pitcher Kyra Shadduck (DeWitt, Mich. [Lansing C.C.]) reached on a  blooper over the pitcher's head but Garver was thrown out trying to go to third.

In the top of the seventh, Warner had a leadoff double and scored on a WSU throwing error.  Jones, who reached on the error, scored on the very next pitch as Bredel hit a sacrifice fly to deep right field.

WSU tried to erase its two-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh despite the first two batters being retired.  Bunch hammered a 1-0 pitch to left center for her first collegiate home run.  DeWitt worked a five-pitch walk, but after a pitching change, junior Molly Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) was retired after fouling off a couple of two-strike pitches.

IN THE CIRCLE
Shadduck (2-2) tossed a complete game allowing five runs (just two earned runs) on six hits.  She struck out seven and walked four.

Carter (5-0), who earned the save in game one, went 6.2 innings in the nightcap and limited WSU to four earned runs on nine hits.  She struck out one and walked two.  Kayla Dykin earned her fourth save of the season by throwing seven pitches and recording one strikeout.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Bunch and Cole each had two hits, while Koopman drove in a pair.

LEADING THE OILERS
Jones went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Warner also had two hits.
