Men's Tennis Drops 4-1 Decision to Northwood in NCAA Regional

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The 2026 season for the No. 20-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (14-11 overall) fell 4-1 to No. 30-ranked Northwood University (18-2 overall) in the first round of the NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Warriors battled in doubles, but fell in two-of-three matches, dropping the doubles point.

WSU switched pairings, as George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) and Sam Knowles (North Shields, Tyne and Wear, England / King's Priory School) occupied the top spot for the Green and Gold.  The Wayne State duo fell 6-4 to NU's Juan Perez Garcia and Marc Farras.

Luis Klaus (Brühl, Germany / Archbishop's St. Ursula gymnasium [TH Köln]) and Thomas Mathys (Grimisuat, Switzerland / ECCG - Martigny) saw action together in the No. 2 doubles position, defeating AJ Duggan and Sergio Lopez Guillen 6-4 to tie the doubles.

Harry Forsyth (Wamberal, New South Wales, Australia / The McDonald College [Mississippi College]) and Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School) went toe-to-toe with Finn Buschmaas and Andrey Pikulin, but fell 7-6.

SINGLES
Klaus was the lone winner in singles for WSU, as the graduate student capped his incredible final season with the Warriors with a 6-0, 6-3 defeat of Pikulin.

At the top singles flight, Day competed with Guillen, as the Northwood student-athlete prevailed 6-4, 6-2.

Wasner fell in the No. 3 singles position, being bested 6-3, 6-2 to Farras.

Freshman Mathys was downed in the fourth slot, falling 6-0, 6-4 to Duggan.

Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany / Burgau-Gymnasium) and Forsyth were due to compete in the No. 5 and No. 6 singles slots before the Timberwolves clinched the match.

The men's tennis squad finished the season making its fifth-straight NCAA Tournament berth, concluding with a 14-11 overall ledger that included a 7-1 mark when playing in Motown.
