Softball Splits With GLIAC Champion Saginaw Valley To Finish 2026 season

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (17-32 overall, 9-19 GLIAC) concluded its 2026 campaign with a doubleheader split with GLIAC regular-season champion Saginaw Valley State University (34-14 overall, 23-5 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon at Gary L. Bryce Field.  WSU rallied for a 3-2 victory in game one, while the Cardinals won the nightcap 8-0.

GAME 1 RECAP
SVSU took a 1-0 lead just four batters into the contest as Ella Reifschneider drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on a two-out RBI single by Olivia Elliott.

WSU left a runner in scoring position in each of the first three innings and trailed 2-0 after the Cardinals scored once in the top of the fifth.  Mya Purdy had a one-out double, moved to third on a single by Elliott, and scored on a passed ball.

In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore third baseman Kate DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) had a one-out single and moved to second on an infield single by senior second baseman Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.).  Junior Molly Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) ripped a single down the third base line scoring DeWitt to make it 2-1.  Molly's twin junior outfielder Mia Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) followed with a single to center, with her older sister Maddie scoring as the base hit was mishandled.  Pinch-hitter Lexi Mielke (Standish, Mich. / Standish-Sterling [Mid Michigan C.C.]), hit into a fielder's choice with pinch-runner Julia Sandles (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota [UMSL]) scoring the go-ahead run on an errant throw to first.

Saginaw Valley State threatened in the top of the seventh as Purdy had a one-out single.  She stole second and moved to third on a single by Emily Beckas.  A walk to Kenzie Bromley loaded the bases before a strikeout swinging and a fly out to center ended the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE
Senior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) allowed just one earned run (two runs total) on nine hits in seven innings.  She struck out three and walked four to improve to 4-8.

Alana Kimble (16-8) went the distance for SVSU and allowed three runs (two earned) on nine hits in six innings.  She had one strikeout and zero walks.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Molly Hool was the lone WSU batter with a multiple-hit affair and also notched the lone RBI.

LEADING THE CARDINALS
Purdy, Elliott and Bromley each had two hits.

GAME 2 RECAP
Saginaw Valley State snapped a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the third.  A walk to Kimble and Reifschneider was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out.  Lillia Sherman had a sacrifice fly to score the game's first run, and Elliott hit a 2-1 offering over the left field fence for a three-run home run.  It was Elliott's team-leading 10th home run of the season.

SVSU added two runs in the sixth on a walk to Sherman, a single by Elliott, and a double steal plated the Cardinals fifth run.  A two-out walk to Faith Maloney and an RBI single by Kate Pnacek made it 6-0.

In the top of the seventh, Saginaw Valley had three straight batters reach with one out with a single by Evelynn Rybicki scoring one run and a WSU miscue scored the eighth run.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Kyra Shadduck (DeWitt, Mich. [Lansing C.C.]) went the distance for WSU allowing eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits in seven innings.  She struck out five and walked six.

Delaney Conley (3-0) scattered seven hits (six singles and one double) to earn the shutout.  She struck out four and walked two.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Sophomore shortstop Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) and junior Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) each had two hits, while Sandles reached base twice with a single and a walk.

LEADING THE CARDINALS
Elliott went 3-for-3 with three RBI, and Pnacek had two hits and an RBI.
