Baseball Opens GLIAC Tournament with 8-5 Loss to Parkside

The Rangers out-hit the Warriors 15-7.

UTICA, Mich. -- The second-seeded Wayne State University baseball team (35-13 overall) dropped its first game of the 2026 GLIAC Tournament on Thursday afternoon, 8-5 to fifth-seeded Parkside (25-23 overall).  Facing elimination, the Warriors will now face sixth-seeded Purdue Northwest for another 11 a.m. first pitch on Friday morning.

Parkside struck first with three runs in the opening inning before Wayne State got one back in the home half thanks to an Owen Tuccinardi solo home run to dead center, his 12th of the season.  Tuccinardi needs just two more blasts to break the program's single-season record of 13 set by Paul LaMantia in 2010.

The Rangers would go on to make it a four-run deficit with one score in both the third and fifth frames.

Trailing 5-1, the Warriors slimmed the margin back to two in the sixth during Tony Hatzigeorgiou's (Oxford, Mich.) at-bat.  With two outs and and the bases loaded, Hatzigeorgiou hit a hard grounder to a diving shortstop who made the stop.  However, he got up and the attempted throw to second base was wide of his teammate, which allowed both Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) and Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.) to touch home plate.

In the top of the seventh, UWP stretched its advantage back to five (8-3) following a two-run home run to right field and an RBI single to Ty Garza (Grosse Ile, Mich. [Barton College]) at short.

WSU countered with a two spot of its own in the bottom of the inning as Tuccinardi scored Brady Blakita (Canton, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) with a sacrifice fly to right and Hitzelberger singled in Hill.  That would do it for the Green and Gold's scoring, though.

Will Lowery (Grosse Ile, Mich. [Kalamazoo Valley C.C.]) made the start and lasted five frames, but suffered the loss to fall to 7-2 on the season.  On 84 pitches, Lowery gave up five earned runs on 10 hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

Out of the bullpen, Wayne State's three relievers included Philip Miller (Flat Rock, Mich. / Woodhaven [Schoolcraft C.C. / Tusculum]), TJ McAllister (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / South Lake) and Joel Mator (Trenton, Mich.).  Those three took care of seven batters, two batters and three batters, respectively.
