Baseball Walks Off Parkside in 10 Innings, Eliminated by Davenport in Nightcap

After going 2-2 at the GLIAC Tournament, Wayne State finds out its NCAA Tournament fate on Sunday night's Selection Show.

UTICA, Mich. -- The second-seeded Wayne State University baseball team's (37-14 overall) run in the GLIAC Tournament came to a close on Saturday night at UWM Field.  The Warriors walked off fifth-seeded Parkside (25-25 overall) 10-9 in 10 innings for game one, before falling to third-seeded Davenport (29-25 overall) 12-5 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE
Much like Friday's contest for WSU against Purdue Northwest, the re-match with Parkside on Saturday was very much an offense-first affair.  The two squads combined for 19 runs on 27 hits, along with 10 walks to 11 strikeouts.

The Green and Gold had to play from behind for a third consecutive game, as UWP scored two runs before an out was even recorded in the top of the first.  The Rangers ultimately obtained a 3-0 lead before the Warriors had an opportunity to bat.

No runs would cross home plate until Wayne State broke through in the bottom of the third with four runs to nab a 4-3 advantage.  Following back-to-back singles by Caleb Sanders (Eastpointe, Mich. / Detroit Edison Public School Academy [Dayton]) and Brady Blakita (Canton, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central), along with a Parkside pitching change, Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.) broke the ice with a run-scoring single to plate Sanders.  Hitzelberger then stole second base, which set up the fourth straight single courtesy of Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) that brought in two more runs.

Later in the third, Ty Garza (Grosse Ile, Mich. / [Barton College]) put down a perfect bunt to allow Hill to score and give WSU that aforementioned 4-3 edge.

That lead would be short-lived, however, as the Rangers would score three runs of their own in the top of the fourth to re-take a 6-4 advantage.

6-4 would remain the score until the top of the sixth, when UWP tacked on another run to lead 7-5 heading into the final third of the game.

Down to their final three innings before elimination, Wayne State saddled up once again and put together three runs in the bottom of the seventh for another lead change.  With the bases full of Warriors and one out, Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich.) lined a two-run single to center that knotted the score at 7-7.  Immediately after, Brayden Crowe (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland) made contact and ultimately reached on a fielder's choice to give WSU a 8-7 lead after seven.

UWP tied the contest at 8-8 in the top of the eighth on a suicide squeeze that turned into a WSU throwing error, and despite opportunities on both sides neither could score again in regulation.

With the elimination game now in extra innings, Parkside would put together some two-out magic via a run-scoring triple off the bat of Joe Mrowiec to put the Rangers in front, 9-8.  That lead lasted all of two batters, however, as Wayne State used back-to-back doubles by Hitzelberger and Hill to make it 9-9.  After a series of pitching changes, stolen bases, and intentional walks, the bases were loaded for Garza, who did not make hard contact but enough contact.  His dribbler to the mound led to a fielder's choice and a throwing error by the UWP catcher that allowed the winning run (Tuccinardi) to walk home and send the Warriors to the nightcap of the Saturday's GLIAC Tournament tripleheader.

Six Warriors combined to throw an even 10 innings in game one.  Jack Saputo (Windsor, Ont. / St. Anne Catholic [Macomb C.C.]) made his first start as a Warrior, before giving way to usual starting pitcher Keegan Pulford-Thorpe (Aurora, Ont. / Newmarket [Central Florida / Georgia Highlands College]).  Pulford-Thorpe went the next five innings (5 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO), before giving way to Evan Langlois (Brownstown, Mich. / Woodhaven) for the next 1.2 IP (one earned run on three hits).  Rocco Cardinale (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) and Joel Mator (Trenton, Mich.) were the next two relievers.  Mator pitched 1.2 strong innings to help send the game into extra innings.

Finally, Will Lowery (Grosse Ile, Mich. / [Kalamazoo Valley C.C.]) made his second relief appearance of 2026 and improved to 8-2 on the season by being the pitcher of record when the Warriors scored the winning run.

GAME TWO
Davenport put up four runs in the top of the first inning following a three-run home run as well as a solo blast.  Wayne State got one of those four scores back in the bottom of the second when Hatzigeorgiou singled in Rhett Roeser (New Baltimore, Mich. / Warren De La Salle).

After the Panthers tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the third, the Warriors countered with two runs this time.  Roeser scored Hitzelberger with a base knock to left-center field and Hatzigeorgiou notched another RBI single, this time forcing in Roeser.

With the score at 6-3 at that point, DU padded its lead with a two spot in the fifth, one run in the sixth, two in the eighth, and another in the ninth to stretch the margin to nine, 12-3.  WSU's final two runs were scored in the home half of the ninth when Owen Tuccinardi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) doubled in Hitzelberger and Roeser singled in Tuccinardi.

The Green and Gold sent seven pitchers to the mound including Nick Baker (Brighton, Mich. [Lansing C.C.]), Will DeMasse (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota), Coy Plummer (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon), TJ McAllister (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / South Lake), Ethan Getting (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Northern [Purdue Northwest])), Carson Tehan (LaSalle, Ont. / Sandwich S.S.), and Oscar Pace (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland).

Baker suffered the loss, his first of the season, after just one inning of work and is now 2-1.
