Women's Soccer To Visit Detroit Mercy Sunday Evening

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's soccer program, fresh off its first game and win in program history, will make the cross-town trek to Detroit Mercy for a 7 PM match on Sunday evening.

TEAM RECORDS
WSU has a 1-0 mark having played its lone regular-season match at Northwood on Thursday (a 2-0 victory over the Timberwolves). The Titans are 2-2 on the season with wins over Eastern Michigan (1-0) and at Valparaiso (3-2), along with setbacks at Kentucky (6-0) and vs. Toledo (1-0).

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Kate Helfen (Troy, Mich. [Cincinnati]) made two saves in recording the clean sheet. The first goal in program history was scored by graduate student Mairin Wessner (Northville, Mich. [Dayton]) after taking a throw-in from redshirt sophomore Addison Ayris (Washington, Mich. / Romeo [Detroit Mercy]). Wessner dribbled around a few NU defenders and drilled a shot past the Northwood goalkeeper. WSU's second goal was scored by freshman Sienna Mroue (Dearborn, Mich.) after a feed from classmate Sabrina Gaul (Troy, Mich.). Freshman defender Ellie Whalen (Commerce Township, Mich. / Pontiac Notre Dame Prep) had started the scoring play by clearing the ball ahead to Gaul.

Wayne State's starting lineup at Northwood consisted of five true freshmen (Olivia Jasniewicz, Molly Labate, Sienna Mroue, Ellie Whalen and Morgan Wilcox), one redshirt freshman (Kate Carrico), a sophomore (Emily Mendrick), two redshirt sophomores (Addison Ayris and Kate Helfen), redshirt senior and team captain (Reagan Brengman), and a graduate student (Mairin Wessner).

WSU is led by head coach Doug Steinard, who was hired to start the program in August of 2025.

LEADING THE TITANS
Emma Henry leads UDM with two goals and five points as the Titans have scored four goals in four matches, while allowing nine goals (however six of the goals against came in a contest at Kentucky). Avery Mondoux and Sam Sickinger are the other goal scorers for Detroit Mercy.

Eva Hill has played three matches in goal for UDM compiling a 1-2-0 record with a 2.33 goals against average and 19 saves. Izzy Rener was the goalkeeper in the 3-2win at Valparaiso.

Head coach Steve Shelton is in his eighth season with the Titans having been hired in the summer of 2019.

PRESEASON POLLS
Wayne State was tabbed for seventh in the GLIAC Preseason Coaches Poll, while Detroit Mercy was ranked 11th in the 2026 Under Armour #HLWSOC Preseason Poll, just ahead of Purdue Fort Wayne.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will play two matches next weekend, including the first home game in program history at 6 PM on Friday, Sept. 4 as Midwest Region foe Ohio Dominican visits the WSU Soccer Complex. The Warriors will conclude the weekend set with a 10:30 AM match on Sunday at Madonna.
