DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (4-5 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) came up short on Friday night in its 2026 GLIAC opener, 3-1 against Saginaw Valley State (7-2 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) as the Cardinals ran their winning streak to five.

HOW IT HAPPENED (17-25, 22-25, -17, 23-25)
- Wayne State hit .220 for the match with 50 kills and 22 errors on 127 total attacks.
- Saginaw Valley State hit .286 in its own right with 55 kills and 19 mishaps on 126 attempts.
- The Warriors best individual set efficiency came with their backs against the wall in the third at .343 (15-3-35).
- The Cardinals were at their most efficient in the opening period with a .360 clip (12-3-25).
- In the team head-to-head, all major categories were decided by six or less.
- In favor of WSU -- total blocks (7-6) and digs (48-44).
- SVSU held the edge in points (66-60), kills (55-50), service aces (5-3), and assists (52-46).

- Individually for Wayne State, Kyleigh Weck (14 kills, .444 hitting percentage) and Katie Smith (13, .281) spearheaded the attack.
- Following those two at the top of the kill department was Lauren Essenpreis thanks to seven kills and a .250 efficiency.
- Kayla Dulgar churned out 38 assists while three different Warriors sent home one ace apiece.
- That trio included Essenpreis, Dulgar and Doga Muhtaroglu.
- Defensively, Giselle Burlingame (13 digs) and Dulgar (10 digs) were at the top.
- They were joined there by three Green and Gold performers to notch multiple blocks.
- That included Stout with five stuffs (one solo), Smith with three and Saige Martin with two (one solo).
