Volleyball Wins Twice on Saturday At Gannon Invitational

ERIE, Pa. -- The Wayne State University volleyball squad (4-4 overall) concluded play at the Gannon Invitational on Saturday with a pair of victories. The Warriors won the first two sets against Clarion (5-2 overall) before dropping the next two sets. WSU rebounded for a 15-11 triumph in the deciding fifth set vs. the Golden Eagles. Later in the day on Saturday, Wayne State rallied after falling 25-21 in the opening set to Malone (2-5 overall), by winning the next three sets.

Match One - Wayne State 3, Clarion 2
HOW IT HAPPENED (-27, -21, 21-25, 21-25, -11)
- Wayne State hit .213 for the match with 70 kills and 31 errors on 183 total attacks.
- Clarion countered with a .178 hitting percentage -- 55 kills and 25 mishaps on 169 attempts.
- The Warriors were their most efficient in the opening set at .333 (19-5-42).
- The Golden Eagles came to play in the third period especially at .393 (14-3-28).
- In the team head-to-head, WSU controlled kills (70-55), assists (65-51) and digs (79-66).
- On the other side of that, the foe finished with the advantage in service aces (11-5) and blocks (14-10).

- Four Green and Gold attackers notched double-digit kills, each of which had 13 or more.
- That quartet included Saige Martin (17, .190 hitting percentage), Katerina Stout (16, .414), Katie Smith (15, .136), and Kyleigh Weck (13, .417).
- After making her season debut on Friday against Gannon with a career-high seven kills, Weck upped that personal best to 13.
- Martin has racked up 10-plus kills in six of the team's seven matches, the seventh of which saw her collect nine.
- Staying on offense, Kayla Dulgar dished out 57 assists while five different Warriors tallied one ace apiece.
- Those five with an automatic point were Martin, Dulgar, Doga Muhtaroglu, Marley Onken, and Giselle Burlingame.

- Defensively, the dig department was a collective effort spearheaded by Burlingame's 18.
- On her heels were Onken (14), Dulgar (12) and Lauren Essenpreis (11).
- For Dulgar, that marked the senior veteran's 35th career double-double.
- Above the net, Stout blocked five total attack attempts, two of the solo variety.
- Other performers with multiple stuffs were Martin with three (one solo), Nicole Dupre with three (one solo) and Dulgar with a pair.

- WSU hit .290 for the match with 54 kills and 18 errors on 124 total attacks.
- The Pioneers hit .119 for the match with 36 kills and 21 errors on 126 total attacks.
- After hitting -.023 in the first set (11-12-43), the Warriors hit at least .444 in each of the final three sets.
- Malone's best hitting set was the second at .241 (10-3-29) after hitting .158 (10-4-38) in the opening set.
- Wayne State won all three major categories: kills (54-36), digs (61-47) and assists (50-34).
- WSU also led in aces (13-3), including six by Katie Smith.
- Blocking was nearly even with the Warriors having a slight edge (2-12) to Malone's (2-10).

- Two Green and Gold attackers notched double-digit kills, with Saige Martin notching a match-best 15 kills, and Kyleigh Weck chipping in with 10 kills.
- Martin has racked up 10-plus kills in seven of the team's eight matches, the eighth of which saw her collect nine.
- Staying on offense, Kayla Dulgar dished out 40 assists while five different Warriors combined for the other 10 assists.

- Defensively, the dig department was a collective effort spearheaded by Burlingame's 13.
- On her heels were Onken (11) and Martin (10).
- Above the net, Katerina Stout and Nicole Dupre each had four blocks (1-3).
