2019:  Transferred to Alma College.

2018:  Did not dress for any games due to a pre-season injury ... received a medical redshirt. 

2017:  Dressed for the final five home games, but did not see any playing time ... was redshirted.

High School:  A 2017 graduate of North Muskegon High School ... was a three-year letterwinner for the Norsemen … recorded 69 tackles, two forced fumbles, five pass break-ups and five interceptions as a senior … selected to the Muskegon Chronicle Second Team offense … also played running back earning Second Team All-Area and First Team All-League honors … rushed for 702 yards and nine touchdowns on 108 carries … was a 2015 Associated Press Division 5-6 Honorable Mention All-State selection … also played basketball for NMHS … played his senior season for coach Larry Witham ... was a team captain in both football and basketball ... ran a season-best of 11.74 for 100m in 2016 ... had a personal-best time of 23.81 for 200m at the 2016 MHSAA Regional meet.

Coach Winters on Vernonell Smith, Jr.:  "Vernonell is a consistent two-way player, who excels on offense as a running back and on defense as a defensive back.  He is an excellent athlete with really good ball skills.  Vernonell will play defensive back because he is a good tackler and can cover a lot of ground when the ball is in the air.  He is very long and athletic and makes us better in the secondary."
