After a Hall of Fame career as a Wayne State student-athlete, Bryan Morrow returned to WSU in 2008 to take over the men’s tennis program. In his 16 seasons at the helm of the Warriors men's tennis program, Morrow has guided WSU to a 227-147 record and eight NCAA Tournament appearances, plus three GLIAC Tournament titles in 2019, 2022 and 2023. Morrow was selected ITA National Coach of the Year in 2022 after leading WSU to an appearance in the national championship match.
Last year (2023-24), the men's tennis program finished second in both the GLIAC regular-season (5-1) and tournament, but won an NCAA Regional title and a Sweet Sixteen match-up with Washburn before falling to top-ranked Saint Leo.
The 2022-23 team made another run in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the quarterfinals before dropping a 4-1 decision to eventual national champion Barry. The Warriors posted a 23-10 overall record, which included a win streak of 12 matches. Despite finishing second in the regular season in the GLIAC, WSU swept the GLIAC Tournament, topping Grand Valley State and regular season champion Ferris State 4-0 to claim back-to-back conference titles. The team went on to blank both Drury and Southwest Baptist 4-0 in the NCAA Midwest Regional (First and Second Rounds). In Orlando, Fla., the Warriors defeated Washburn, 4-2.
In the 2022-23 campaign, Morrow earned his 200th win as WSU head coach in the 7-0 victory at Michigan Tech on April 1, 2023.
He helped mentor Cedric Drenth, who was named GLIAC Player of the Year for 2023 and became the third player of the year under Morrow. Drenth was also voted Academic All-American of the Year by College Sports Communicators (CSC) and he and Daniel Grey were selected as ITA All-Americans for the second consecutive season.
The 2021-22 squad began the spring season with seven wins in eight matches, including a triumph at Division 1 Toledo. After a 4-3 setback at Indianapolis, the Warriors went 5-2 in their next seven matches but notched wins over #5-Embry-Riddle and #1-Barry. WSU blitzed its GLIAC opponents winning 45 out of a possible 49 points winning every match either 7-0 or 6-1.
Wayne State claimed a pair of 4-1 victories at the GLIAC Tournament defeating Davenport and Grand Valley. In the NCAA Midwest Regionals, the Warriors blanked Lewis and GVSU by identical 4-0 scores to win the first NCAA Regional title in program history.
At the NCAA Championship Tournament in Florida, WSU defeated Southern New Hampshire before another 4-3 win over #5-Embry-Riddle. In the national semifinal match, Wayne State rallied to defeat #1-Columbus (Ga.) State 4-3 becoming the first "northern" school since 2002 to reach the national championship match. #3-Barry upended WSU 4-1.
Cedric Drenth and Daniel Grey became the first WSU doubles tandem to be selected ITA All-Americans after being ranked fourth nationally. In addition, Dom Spicer was selected as ITA Midwest Regional Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award recipient. He was the top-ranked singles player in the region and 26th nationally after being voted GLIAC Player of the Year.
Not only did the Warriors succeed on the court, WSU led the GLIAC with seven All-Academic Excellence honorees, and the men's tennis program was the top men's sport nationally in community service hours according to Helper Helper.
WSU went 8-8 during the 2021 campaign, including a pair of setbacks to Division 1 schools (Western Michigan and Dayton). Morrow mentored the GLIAC Freshman of the Year (Dominic Spicer) as the Warriors went 5-2 in league play and finished third at the GLIAC Tournament. Freshman Daniel Grey joined Spicer on the All-GLIAC First Team, while sophomore Luke Laws garnered All-GLIAC Second Team recognition. In addition, Donovan Nguyen was named to the Honorable Mention All-GLIAC Team.
Morrow led the 2019-20 squad to an 8-5 start. Unfortunately the season was cut short due to COVID-19. Under the guidance of Morrow, Niklas Karcz was named NCAA DII UTR/ITA National Player of the Month for September after making it to the 2019 ITA Regional Tournament semifinals. In addition, Pierre Renaudie and Max Rink were both selected GLIAC Player of the Week at the start of 2020. Karcz and Renaudie finished the season ranked in the top-12 in the Midwest Region for singles, while Karcz and Luke Laws were regionally ranked fourth in doubles.
During the 2018-19 academic year, Morrow led the Warriors to arguably the best season since 1981 in the spring of 2019. WSU went undefeated in conference matches, claiming the GLIAC regular-season title. Prior to winning the 2019 GLIAC Tournament, Morrow was recognized as GLIAC Coach of the Year, while sophomore Niklas Karcz was named GLIAC Player of the Year (the first men's tennis player from WSU since it was instituted in 1983). Additionally, Morrow had six players from his 2018-19 team recognized with All-GLIAC honors. Under Morrow's leadership, the squad advanced to the second round of the 2019 NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament.
Morrow earned his second GLIAC Coach of the Year award in 2018, after notching his first honor in 2010.
One that stresses academics, Coach Morrow has mentored 86 Academic All-GLIAC honorees in his 13 years, including 14 three-time selections in Ryan Carlson (2015-16-17), Thomas Ducret (2011-12-13), Michael FitzGerald (2012-13-14), Oscar Gamarra (2011-12-13), Jon Groszek (2011-12-13), Melvin Joseph (2012-13-14), Niklas Karcz (2019, 20, 21, 22, 23), Luke Laws (2021, 22, 23), Marlon Leone (2009-10-11), Donovan Nguyen (2020, 21, 22), Will Nolan (2010-11-12), Harvey Reed (2016-17-18), Dominic Spicer (2021, 22, 23) and Eric Szydlowski (2009-10-11).
Former four-year letterwinner Michael FitzGerald was the recipient of the 2014-15 GLIAC Post-Graduate scholarship, while Thomas Ducret was a two-time GLIAC Commissioner's Award honoree (2011 and 2012). In addition, Mats Westkamp was voted GLIAC Freshman of the Year in 2017.
Morrow notched his 100th career win after defeating Northwood, 5-1, in the third-place match at the 2016 GLIAC Tournament. The Warriors finished third in the conference standings in 2015-16 with a 7-2 mark.
In 2011, Gamarra was a Second Team Academic All-District selection and in 2012 Gamarra became the first tennis player, male or female, in school history to earn Academic All-America honors as he was voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Men's At-Large Third Team.
Morrow led the Warriors to their third NCAA Tournament appearance in six seasons in 2013-14 after finishing in a tie-for-second in the GLIAC during the regular season and finishing third at the GLIAC Tournament.
Wayne State finished second in the GLIAC regular season standings in 2012-13, recording a 9-2 mark in conference play. Morrow also guided the Warriors to a fifth-straight top-four finish at the GLIAC Tournament. Following the season, he was named the 2013 ITA Midwest Regional Coach of the Year.
WSU's 17 victories and its .680 winning percentage in 2010-11 were the best totals since the 2004 team went 26-5 and finished with a .839 mark.
In addition, the team earned a second-place finish at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament for the second year in a row and received its second consecutive bid to the NCAA tournament.
In Morrow's second season at the helm, WSU produced a record of 15-8 and earned a spot in the NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis Tournament. The Warriors’ second-place showing at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament was the program’s best finish since 1992.
At the conclusion of the season, Morrow’s efforts were rewarded by being named the GLIAC’s 2010 Coach of the Year.
In his inaugural season, Morrow’s squad had a record of 6-12 and finished fourth at the 2009 GLIAC Tournament.
He has also coached 57 All-GLIAC selections in 14 seasons (no all-league teams were selected in 2020 due to COVID-19).

Morrow became the ninth men's tennis player inducted into the Wayne State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003. The Warren Woods-Tower High School graduate played at WSU in 1987 and 1989 through 1991 and was in the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles position his final three seasons.
As a singles player, Morrow had just two losses his junior season, both to Ferris State's all-time leading winner Kurt Hammerschmidt. In his final year, Morrow was the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference runner-up to FSU's four-time conference champion Paul Marcum with an 11-8 overall record and qualified to play in the NCAA Division II singles championships in Edmond, Oklahoma.
Morrow's doubles career with partner Gary Lutes was one of the best in school history. The team lost just twice in 1989 and compiled a 17-4 record their final season as they captured the GLIAC Championship and earned a berth to the national doubles championships as well as the singles.
Morrow's success guided the Wayne State men's tennis team to a second-place finish behind Ferris State with an overall record of 7-9 in 1991 and helped head coach Allison Tookes to her fourth GLIAC Coach of the Year award.
Following the national tournament, Morrow graduated in December 1991 with a degree in marketing sales management.
Morrow has been the co-head professional and co-manager at the Peachtree Tennis Club in Clinton Township, for the past 10 years.
He is married to Michele Roy-Morrow, who earned her master's degree from Wayne State in speech therapy. The couple lives in Rochester Hills, and has three children, Benjamin, Emily and Matthew.
