UPDATED June 21, 2023

Matthew Jurek officially became the Sports Information Graduate Assistant Intern on Jan. 4, 2023, and has served in that capacity since. He is the primarily media contact for men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s fencing, and men’s and women’s tennis.

In his first semester as the primary media contact for tennis, he oversaw both Warrior tennis teams winning their respective Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) championships, both hosting and winning their respective NCAA Regionals, and both reaching the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals in Florida.

Jurek has been involved with the Wayne State University Athletic Department in some way since February 2022, when he served as an undergraduate intern within the same sports information/media relations department.  In that role, he fulfilled his required hours by helping on game days for the various winter and spring sports (basketball, baseball, softball, etc.) and by working to update the Wayne State athletics website. Jurek served in  this role until July 2022, when he completed the internship.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sport Management from Wayne State University’s College of Education in August 2022, posting a 3.96 GPA.

After completing undergrad, Jurek remained within the athletic department as a Student Assistant in the fall semester from September 2022 through December 2022.  Once again, he primarily aided the media relations staff on football, volleyball, and basketball game days as needed in various roles and capacities.

As a graduate assistant, Jurek is currently pursuing his master's degree in Sports Administration within the College of Education.  Personally, he has two younger brothers and one older sister and enjoys watching professional sports, primarily auto racing and sports that include teams from Detroit -- such as the Tigers, Red Wings, and Lions.
