Brenden Marcum joined head coach Grant Lofdahl's cross country and women's track & field coaching staffs in the summer of 2026.  His move to Detroit came after an eight-year stint (2017-25) as the cross country coach at Johannesburg-Lewiston Area Schools in Johannesburg, Mich.

During his tenure there, the Cardinals achievements included the following:

• 2022 Women’s Team State Championship
• 2022 Men’s Team State Championship Runner-Up
• 2023 Women's Team State Championship Runner-Up
• 2023 Sprint Medley Relay All-American
• 2024 & 2025 800 Meter State Champion & D4 State Record Holder

Marcum ran cross country for Michigan State University 2007 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from MSU in 2025.
