Men's Hockey Defeats Guelph, 6-1

DETROIT - The Wayne State University men's hockey team recorded a 6-1 exhibition win over the University of Guelph Thursday night at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum.

After being shutout for over 119 minutes last weekend at the Lefty McFadden Invitational, the Warriors scored twice in the first six minutes against the Gryphons.

Freshman left wing Jon Grabarek (Sterling Hts., Mich./Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) netted a power-play goal just 2:24 into the contest off assists from Dan Iliakis (Scarborough, Ont./Georgetown Raiders) and Jason Baclig (Leamington, Ont./Leamington Flyers).

Senior defenseman Steve Kovalchik (Riverview, Mich./Omaha Lancers) scored the eventual game-winner at the 5:31 mark. His man-advantage marker was assisted by Jason Bloomingburg (Canton, Mich./Texas Tornado) and Stavros Paskaris (Dearborn, Mich./Kewadin Indians).

Sophomore center Mike Forgie (Scarborough, Ont./Stouffville Spirit) completed the special teams with a short-handed tally with 6:01 remaining in the opening stanza. Freshman Derek Punches (Manchester, Mich./Texas Tornado) earned the lone helper.

Sophomore center Adam Krug (Livonia, Mich./Sioux City Musketeers) scored WSU's third power-play goal of the match just 86 seconds into the middle period off an assist from Kovalchik.

Baclig then scored twice in a span of 4:21 in the middle part of the second period to complete WSU's scoring. His even-strength marker at the 9:52 mark was assisted by Mark Cannon (River Rouge, Mich./Compuware) and John May (Livonia, Mich./Springfield Junior Blues). Baclig's power-play goal was assisted by Grabarek and junior blueliner Taylor Donohoe (Richmond, B.C./Powell River Kings).

The Gryphons lone tally was scored by Jeff Cook and came just 22 seconds after Baclig's final goal.

Junior Will Hooper (Woodbridge, Ont./Wexford Raiders) started between the pipes for WSU and stopped all eight shots he faced in 29:52. Senior Matt Kelly (Hull, Mass./Topeka Scarecrows) turned aside four of the five shots he saw he the final 30:08.

UG goalies Lance Scott and Andrew Arklie each made 17 saves.

Wayne State had four man-advantage markers in 10 chances with 24 power-play shots on goal. Guelph went zero-for-six on the power play.

The Warriors next action will be an exhibition game on Wednesday, Oct. 19 versus Oakland University's club team. Face-off at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum is slated for 7:05 p.m.
