Gill and Vuksanovic Win ITA Midwest Regional Doubles Final

Milena Vuksanovic and Sharon Gill defeat Chelsea Johnston and Darylann Trout 9-8 (6).

Wayne State's Milena Vuksanovic and Sharon Gill capped off their weekend in spectacular fashion Sunday as the duo won the 2009 Women's Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Tournament doubles competition.

In what was a highly contested back-and-forth match, Gill and Vuksanovic managed to defeat Grand Valley State's Chelsea Johnston and Darylann Trout 9-8 (6) in Sunday's final. The team of Gill and Vuksanovic is the second in the history of Wayne State tennis to win a Midwest Regional doubles final.

The pair will now move on to represent Wayne State in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Championships in October.

Gill was unable to make it a two title day Sunday, falling to Northwood's Darina Berkova 2-6,6-2,(10-6) in the singles tournament semifinals. Although Gill was the only person in the tournament to win a set from the top-seeded Berkova.

The Wayne State tennis team will be in action again on Wednesday Sept. 23 against Northwood University at the WSU Tennis Courts. Competition is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
