WSU Softball Downs Georgia College 4-1

Three-run second inning proves to be the difference.

Decatur, Ala. -- The 20th-ranked Wayne State University softball squad (2-0 overall) completed its opening day of the season with a 4-1 triumph over Georgia College & State University (4-4) in the second round of the Decatur Softball Chillout.  The Bobcats lost earlier in the day, 5-3 in eight innings, to West Alabama.

GCSU's Kelsea Martin led off the game with a double but was stranded at third.  In the bottom of the frame, sophomore Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Cardinal Carter), moved to third on a ground out by Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) and scored on a sacrifice fly by newcomer Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston).

The Bobcats had another leadoff double in the second, this by Ann Parker, but she was erased on a fielder's choice.

WSU wasted no time adding to its lead.  After the first batter was retired, senior Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont. / Forest Heights C.I.) doubled to center field.  Following a ground out, sophomore Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) singled through the right side plating LeClair.  Allen's double down the left field line scored Histed to make it 3-0.  Allen advanced to third as Banton reached on a strikeout with a passed ball.  Stanley's single to right center scored Allen with WSU's final run.

GCSU scored an unearned run in the fifth off WSU starter Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont. / St. Mary's), who pitched five innings allowing five hits.  She struck out one and walked one.  Senior Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) tossed the final two innings striking out three and allowing two hits.

Allen went 2-for-2 in the contest with two runs scored and an RBI.  Sophomore Becca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) went 1-for-2 with a double, while LeClair had two hits in three at bats.  Sophomore Kristina Susalla (Garden City, Mich. / Garden City) singled in her lone plate appearance.

Wayne State is slated to play two more games on Saturday -- at 1 pm Eastern vs. Southern Indiana (click here for live stats) and at 5 pm Eastern vs. North Alabama (click here for live stats).
