Salisbury, N.C. -- The 20th-ranked Wayne State University softball squad (6-2) received a little extra inning magic on Friday afternoon as senior
Jaci Banton singled in
Dani Williams with the winning run in the bottom of the 11th for a
6-5 victory against Armstrong Atlantic (4-3).
WSU grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a leadoff home run by sophomore
Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy).
The Pirates tied the game in the third on a leadoff home run.
The Warriors regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a solo shot by senior
Steph LeClair (Kitchener, Ont. / Forest Heights C.I.).
AASU took a 3-2 lead in the fifth on three singles, a bases loaded walk and an RBI single.
Wayne State manufactured a tying run in the bottom of the fifth as
Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) drew a leadoff walk, and moved to second on a walk to Allen. Banton's (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Cardinal Carter) sacrifice bunt advanced both runners with Histed scoring on Rebecca Stanley's (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) sacrifice fly.
Neither team was able to score in the next two innings, or even the eighth inning using the international tie-breaker rule.
The Pirates scored twice in the ninth on a two-out, two-run single. The Warriors battled back with two runs of their own. Pinch-hitter
Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont. / St. Mary's) singled advancing "placed" runner
Bailey Reid (Guelph, Ont. / Ross Collegiate V.I.) to third. An intentional walk to Allen loaded the bases and Banton drove in one run on a ground out. Stanley walked re-loading the bases, with Becca Ryan's (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) walk plating
Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) with the tying run.
Neither squad was able to score in the 10th and AASU went 1-2-3 in the top of the 11th.
In the bottom of the frame, Williams (Monroe, Mich. / Jefferson) was placed on second and advanced to third on Histed's sacrifice bunt. Allen was intentionally walked again, but Banton delivered the game-winning hit.
Senior pitcher
Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) pitched all 11 innings striking out eight and walking four. She allowed eight hits, five runs, three earned but improved her record to 5-1.
WSU was limited to seven hits by two AASU hurlers with Banton being the lone Warrior with two hits.
