Softball Improves To 19-4 With 5-1 Win Over Shepherd

Kissimmee, Fla. -- The fifth-ranked Wayne State University softball squad (19-4 overall) recorded a 5-1 triumph over Shepherd University (10-3) Thursday afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games.

The Warriors snapped a scoreless tie in the third as sophomore right fielder Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) drilled the first pitch of the inning over the center field fence.

WSU extended its lead to 4-0 with a three-run fourth inning.  Sophomore first baseman Becca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) had a leadoff single to right center and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior left fielder Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont. / Forest Heights C.I.).  Freshman Bailey Reid (Guelph, Ont. / Ross Collegiate V.I.) had an RBI single to center.  Freshman center fielder Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) recorded her first collegiate home run with a two-run shot to left center.

Wayne State tallied its final run in the top of the fifth on a one-out single by LeClair, a passed ball and a Foreman RBI double to left field.

The Rams tallied their lone run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out single to left followed by a single to right center and a WSU error.

Warrior sophomore Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) went the distance in the circle to record her second win of the season.  Cain struck out five and walked one, while allowing five hits and one unearned run.

Tricia Bettura started for SU and allowed five earned runs on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings with two walks and two strikeouts.  Nichole Pitcock did not allow a hit in her 2 2/3 innings of work.

Both Allen and Foreman had three hits with Foreman driving in three runs.
