Softball Upends Bridgeport 7-2

Warriors record 13 hits.

Kissimmee, Fla. -- The fifth-ranked Wayne State University softball team (20-4 overall) recorded a 7-2 triumph over the University of Bridgeport (0-12 overall) Friday afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games.

Three WSU pitchers combined to limit the Purple Knights to three hits, while the Warrior bats came alive with 13 base hits.

WSU scored twice in the top of the second on a leadoff single by Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont. / Forest Heights C.I.) and a two-out two-run home run by catcher Rachel Spaccarotelli (Ray, Mich. / Romeo).

UB tallied one run in the bottom of the third off reliever Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) on a walk, a wild pitch, a single and a fielder's choice.

The Warriors made it a two-run game again with a single run in the top of the sixth, but Bridgeport answered with a run in the bottom of the frame.  In the top of the sixth, Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Becca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child).  Stanley moved to third on a single by LeClair and scored on a ground out by Bailey Reid (Guelph, Ont. / Ross Collegiate V.I.).

Wayne State then completed scoring with a four run top of the seventh.  Spaccarotelli had a leadoff walk and pinch-runner Makelle Barski (Trenton, Mich.) stole second and went to third on a single by Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica), who advanced to second on the throw.  Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) singled scoring Barksi, while Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Cardinal Carter) followed with an RBI single plating Histed.  Stanley made it three hits in a row with an RBI single.  Pinch-hitter Kristina Susalla (Garden City, Mich.) recorded an RBI ground out for the final run.

Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont. / St. Mary's) started in the circle and went 1 1/3 innings before suffering an injury.  She allowed one hit and recorded a strikeout.  Cain worked 2 2/3 innings allowing one run and two hits with four strikeouts.  Senior Casey Hanes () notched the victory to improve to 15-2 on the season.  Hanes tossed three innings of hitless ball but allowed an unearned run as the WSU had two miscues.  She struck out three and walked one.

Madison Smith went the distance for the Purple Knights allowing seven earned runs on 13 hits with two strikeouts.

Stanley went 4-for-4, while Banton, LeClair and Histed each had two hits.
