DETROIT - The Wayne State University baseball team (7-9, 1-2 GLIAC) surrendered seven runs in the fifth inning on its way to an
8-6 loss to Ashland University (12-7, 4-1 GLIAC) in the second game of Saturday's twinbill.
Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova), who posted his third consecutive two-hit game, needs just two more hits to surpass Frank Jeney (2002-05) as Wayne State's all-time hits leader. LaPensee's second RBI double of the game, as part of WSU's three-run fourth inning, was his 214th career hit.
Wayne State starter
Brady Cooper (Allen Park, Mich.) took a no-hitter into the decisive fifth inning, when the Eagles racked up six hits and sent 11 men to the plate, erasing WSU's 4-0 lead.
LaPensee's first RBI double of the contest in the bottom of the first inning accounted for all of the scoring until the fourth, when
Andrew Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott) drove in two runs with a single, one of his three hits in the game.
Among the key contributors to Ashland's explosive inning were Jacob Petkac, who brought in a pair with a single up the middle, and Ben Minard, whose base hit plated two more runs.
Perhaps looking for some last-inning heroics similar to Friday night, the Warriors scored twice with two outs in the seventh on an RBI single by
John Skaggs (Adrian, Mich.) and an RBI double by
Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.). Andrew Pinkelman came on in relief of Austin Ritson to record the final out and his second save of the year.
Ritson (2-1) allowed 12 hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts over 6.2 innings. Cooper (1-2) gave up five hits and four walks in 4.1 innings.
Wayne State will host former head coach Jay Alexander and the Eastern Michigan Eagles on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
NOTES
Skaggs' seven-game hitting streak is the longest current stretch on the team …
Paul LaMantia (Tecumseh, Ont./St. Anne's) has a .542 (13-24) average with 13 RBI and nine runs scored during his current six-game hitting streak … the Warriors have lost eight of their last nine game at home to the Eagles.
