Kissimmee, Fla. -- The fifth-ranked Wayne State University softball team (22-4 overall) began the final day of its spring break trip with a
4-0 victory over No. 22-Augustana College in the Rebel Spring Games.
The Vikings loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first, but WSU senior hurler
Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) struck out the next two batters.
In the bottom of the inning, red-hot
Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) recorded her sixth consecutive hit with a single up the middle.
Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Cardinal Carter) had a sacrifice bunt and
Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) followed with an RBI single to center.
The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth when Allen notched her eighth straight hit with a solo home run to center field with one out.
The Warriors added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth as
Becca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) drew a one-out walk and went to third on a double by
Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont. / Forest Heights C.I.) to left field. With two outs,
Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) laced a two-run single to center field.
Meanwhile, Hanes retired the final 12 Viking batters and finished the contest with a four-hit shutout for her sixth whitewash of the season. Hanes struck out 12 and did not walk a batter. She moved into fourth place on WSU's all-time strikeout list with 435 in only a season-and-a-half.
Chelsey Durland went the distance in the circle for Augustana and allowed four earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
