FINDLAY, Ohio - The Wayne State baseball team (10-11, 4-3 GLIAC) split Saturday's doubleheader at Findlay (6-12, 3-6 GLIAC) following a
4-2 loss in the second game.
The Warriors scored twice in the top of the seventh but could not narrow the gap any further, as Ryan Rothenbuhler went the distance for the Oilers, striking out five and walking none in his first win of the year.
Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) finished with two hits, and
John Skaggs (Adrian, Mich.) homered for the first time since April 22, 2007 at Northwood.
The Oilers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, and added to it in the third on RBI singles by Nathaniel Fitch and Bobby Herberger. An RBI double by Robert Marsh in the fourth gave Findlay a 4-0 advantage.
A one-out pinch hit single by
Jamie Bailey (Petrolia, Ont./Lambton) started the Warrior rally in the seventh. After
Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.) reached on a fielder's choice, Skaggs smacked a two-run shot to left.
Caleb Dalman (Hudsonville, Mich.) singled to keep the inning alive, but Rothenbuhler struck out
Phil Swanson (Rochester Hills, Mich./Stoney Creek) to close it out.
Brady Cooper (Allen Park, Mich.) and
Billy Hurley (Mississauga, Ont./St. Aloysius Gonzaga) each worked three innings on the mound for Wayne State. Cooper (1-3) allowed six hits and two walks while striking out a pair.
The Warriors and Oilers will complete the weekend series with a nine-inning game Sunday starting at noon.
NOTES
Skaggs' home run was the third of his career … Wiseman has 11 multiple-hit games this season … the Warriors and Oilers have split the last four doubleheaders played in Findlay.
