DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball squad (31-8 overall, 9-3 GLIAC) had its nine-game winning streak snapped with a
4-3 setback to visiting Tiffin University (19-13 overall, 5-7 GLIAC) in the second game of Sunday's league twinbill at the WSU Softball Field.
The Warriors out-hit the Dragons 9-to-5 but left seven runners on base.
TU scored once in the bottom of the first off WSU starter
Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont. / St. Mary's) on a walk, a sacrifice bunt, and an RBI single to left center by Amanda Temple.
WSU knotted the score in the top of the second as
Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont. / Forest Heights C.I.) had a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Rachel Spaccarotelli (Ray, Mich. / Romeo) and scored on an RBI ground out by
Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy).
Tiffin took a 2-1 lead in the third on a walk, a sacrifice bunt, a ground out and a passed ball.
Wayne State responded to tie the contest in the top of the fourth as LeClair had a one-out double down the left field line. She advanced to second on Spaccarotelli's fly out and scored on an RBI single to right field by Cain.
The Dragons answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame. A leadoff single was followed by two consecutive outs, however Kelly Mayer doubled to the center field fence scored pinch-runner Michelle Manley with the go-ahead run. Delaney Talmage followed with an RBI single to left center scoring Mayer.
Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) replaced Abel, and after a walk on four pitches, recorded the final out of the inning.
Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) had a one-out single in the fifth but was stranded at first.
Wayne State pulled within a run in the sixth as LeClair had a one-out infield single and went to second on a single by Spaccarotelli. LeClair was erased on a fielder's choice, but
Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) followed with an RBI single through the left side scoring pinch-runner
Kassie Snyder (Marine City, Mich.). The next WSU batter grounded out to end the frame leaving runners at first and third.
In the top of the seventh, Allen had a leadoff double down the left field line. Pinch-runner
Makelle Barski (Trenton, Mich.) went to third on a wild pitch. Following an out, Barski was tagged out at home on a fielder's choice and the game ended on another fielder's choice.
Abel (3-2) allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits in 3.2 innings with one strikeout and two walks. Hanes held the Dragons to one hit in 2.1 innings with three strikeouts.
Amber Young (4-4) started for Tiffin and held the Warriors to two runs (both earned) on four hits in four innings. Kelly Mayer earned her second save of the season by pitching the final three innings and holding WSU to one run on five hits.
Allen had three hits including two doubles for WSU, while LeClair went 2-for-2 with a walk.
Wayne State travels to Findlay on Wednesday for a league doubleheader and concludes the non-conference portion of its schedule with a Saturday twinbill at Lake Erie. WSU returns home on Sunday, April 18 for a noon doubleheader against Saginaw Valley.
