Softball Outscores Findlay 15-7 In Nightcap

Spaccarotelli homers twice and drives in four.

Findlay, Ohio -- The 16th-ranked Wayne State University softball squad (33-8 overall, 11-3 GLIAC) completed a road doubleheader sweep with a 15-7 victory at the University of Findlay (13-25 overall, 2-12 GLIAC) on Wednesday.

The Warriors scored seven times in the bottom of the first.  Both Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) and Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Cardinal Carter) reached to start the frame on a single and a walk, respectively and later scored on an error.  Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont. / Forest Heights C.I.) and Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.) had back-to-back RBI doubles to make it 4-0.  Rachel Spaccarotelli (Ray, Mich. / Romeo) completed the first inning scoring with a three-run blast to center field.

The Oilers tallied one in the second on a single and an RBI triple by Hannah Crane, and knotted the game at seven with a six-run third inning off Warrior starter Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy).  With a runner on second and two outs, a wild pitch, a walk, a stolen base and another walk preceded a three-run triple to right center by Taylor Bell.  An error plated another run and Crane added a two-run home run to right center to tie the contest.  WSU senior pitcher Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) entered the match and recorded the third out.

Spaccarotelli led off the bottom of the third with a home run to left and Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) and Allen each singled to chase UF starter Lauren Orban.  After a sacrifice bunt by Banton, Histed scored on a wild pitch giving WSU a 9-7 advantage.

In the fifth, Spaccarotelli had a leadoff single and pinch-runner Kassie Snyder (Marine City, Mich.) went to second on a sacrifice bunt.  After a fly out, Snyder scored on a single by Banton.  Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) and Becca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) followed with back-to-back base hits scoring Banton.

Wayne State ended the contest with four runs in the sixth.  Omelanchuk singled and pinch-runner Makelle Barski (Trenton, Mich.) advanced to second on a single by Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston).  Snyder' single loaded the bases.  After a pop out, Barski scored on a wild pitch and Allen delivered a two-run single to left.  Following a fielder's choice, Stanley had an RBI double to center scoring Banton with the game-ending run.

Hanes only faced 10 batters in 3.1 innings of relief as a ground ball double play followed the lone Findlay hit off the Warrior reliever.  Hanes improved to 27-3 with the win.

Orban (6-11) allowed nine runs (eight earned) on 10 hits in 2+ innings with one walk and one strikeout.  Carly Border pitched the final 3.2 innings allowing six runs on nine hits with one strikeout.

Allen went 4-for-5 with two RBI, while Omelanchuk and Spaccarotelli each had three hits with Spaccarotelli driving in four.  Stanley and Histed each had two hits as WSU recorded 19 hits in the contest.

Wayne State will play a non-conference doubleheader at future GLIAC member Lake Erie College on Saturday before returning to Detroit to host GLIAC rival Saginaw Valley for a noon twinbill on Sunday.
