Baseball Loses Game Two To Tiffin 12-7

TIFFIN, Ohio - The Wayne State University baseball team (22-14, 16-5 GLIAC) was unable to avenge its loss from earlier in the day on Saturday as Tiffin (17-24, 13-11 GLIAC) earned a doubleheader sweep of the Warriors with a 12-7 win in game two.

While game one was a low scoring match-up that saw the two squads combine for just five runs, game two had a surplus of offense with 19 runs and 28 hits.

Leading the Warrior offense was a pair of batters with three hits each in Ryan LaPensee and Paul LaMantia. In addition to his hits, LaMantia drove in four runs and scored another. He now has a team-best 41 RBI on the season. LaPensee, whose batting average increased to .421, plated one run and had three runs scored.

Also helping the Wayne State cause was Alex Trojan, who had two hits while also drawing two walks, and Andrew Ciennik, who had one RBI and one run scored.

WSU got on the board early by way of a LaPensee home run in the first inning. Tiffin also struck in the first by scoring two runs off of WSU starter Tyler Higgins, who lasted 2.2 innings.

Wayne State tied the game at 2-2 in the third inning thanks to a two-out rally. After singles from LaMantia and Michael Wiseman, Trojan hit a double to drive in LaMantia.

However, as would be the case all game, the Dragons countered with a run of their own in third to retake the lead. Even The Warriors' three-run outburst in the fourth was countered as Tiffin exploded for a seven-run fourth frame that ultimately proved to be too much for Wayne State to overcome.

With the score 10-5 heading into the fifth, Tiffin again scored two more runs to push the lead to 12-5. Wayne State scored twice in the sixth off of a double by LaMantia that scored Ciennik and LaPensee, but would be unable to mount anymore offense as the Dragons claimed the 12-7 win.

Four different pitchers took the mound for Wayne State with Matt Rustulka taking his first loss of the year after giving up five runs in two-thirds of an inning. He is now 1-1 on the season.

Wayne State will look to salvage the weekend against Tiffin on Sunday in a nine inning contest that is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
