Baseball Blanks Tiffin For 1-0 Win

TIFFIN, Ohio - Brady Cooper had a career-day on the mound for the Wayne State University baseball team (23-14, 17-5 GLIAC), throwing a complete-game shutout and striking out a career-high 12 batters to lead WSU past Tiffin (17-25, 13-12 GLIAC) 1-0 on Sunday.

Sunday's outing, which was also his first-career shutout, improved Cooper's season record to 4-3 overall with a 3.45 ERA. Cooper, who has now won his last three starts, did not allow a hit until the fourth inning and finished the contest allowing just eight Tiffin batters to reach base off of six singles and two walks.

Kyle Vesey provided the only run of the game in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly to center field that drove in Michael Wiseman. Andrew Ciennik and Alex Trojan both had two hits while four other Warrior batters also had hits.

Both pitchers kept the opposing bats fairly silent through the first three innings before WSU took advantage of one of its few scoring opportunities on the afternoon in the fourth frame.

After a one-out walk by Wiseman, Trojan singled to advance Wiseman to third while also moving to second on the throw. John Skaggs would then draw one of his two walks on the day to load the bases. With just one down, Vesey brought home Wiseman off of a fly out for his 23rd RBI of the season to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

Jamie Bailey then walked to reload the bases, but a strikeout by Phil Swanson ended the inning.

WSU would have chances to score in the seventh and eighth innings, but would come up empty as Bailey was thrown out at home in the seventh and two runners were stranded in the eighth.

However, with the day Cooper had it would not matter. The senior pitcher did not allow a runner to get past second base and ended the game by striking out the side in the seventh inning.

Wayne State will host Findlay at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday for a doubleheader in the Warriors' final home contests of the season.
