Warriors Sweep Oilers With 7-3 Victory

LaMantia homers for second straight game

DETROIT - The Wayne State University baseball team (25-14, 19-5 GLIAC) swept Wednesday's doubleheader against the University of Findlay (13-28, 5-21 GLIAC) with a 7-3 victory in the second game, as WSU closed out its 2010 home schedule.

Paul LaMantia (Tecumseh, Ont./St. Anne's) homered for the second straight game as he went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) raised his season average to .431 with a pair of hits, and Tom Olson (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) finished with three hits including two doubles.

The first-place Warriors exceeded their 2009 GLIAC win total and matched their overall win total from a year ago.

Wayne State erased an early 1-0 deficit with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. LaPensee, LaMantia, Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) and Alex Trojan (Fenton, Mich./Hartland) drove in a run apiece.

Findlay scored a run in the third and fifth innings, by WSU answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of both frames and added an insurance tally in the sixth on an RBI single by Andrew Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott).

Tyler Loehr (Brighton, Mich.) improved to 6-1 on the year, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks. He also struck out three in 4.1 innings of work before giving way to Billy Hurley (Mississauga, Ont./St. Aloysius Gonzaga) and David White (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy), who combined for 2.2 hitless innings.

Wayne State will begin a weekend series Saturday at Hillsdale.

NOTES
White tied the school record in making his 49th career relief appearance … he also tied Ran Woodard (2000-03) for third all-time in games pitched (53) … LaPensee, who is 10-for-17 over the last four games, leads WSU with 21 multiple-hit games this season … Wayne State has won seven straight home games against Findlay dating back to 2007.
